Fair Price for a Wisconsin VE4 engine?

We were over to a friend of a friend of my dad's today getting rid of an old car (he wanted it for parts), and I happened to notice that he had an old Wisconsin VE4 engine sitting on the ground, which looked pretty much complete. I went and checked to see if it turned; unfortunately it didn't. I mentioned that I was interested in it if he wanted to sell it because I thought one of those would make a real nice garden tractor engine. Anyway, he said he might be willing to take $35 for it.

What I want to know is, do you think this is a fair price for a stuck Wisconsin VE4? Sorry I don't have more information on it, but I only got the chance to look at it for a few minutes.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Nathan

sir, stuck valves are common, but they wont keep it from turning. when u get it to turn, move each piston to top ctr on firing stroke. use an allen wrench to reach into s. plug hole, u can tap valves down & unstik them. do no use a ex pipe shorter than 12", u will burn ex valves. good motor, hard 2 hand crank when hot.

The valves are probably the only thing stuck and the head bolts will twist off trying to fix it.

No 2 steel (3 foot and less) is $50 a ton. I would guess cast to be $60.

Almost any one who had one of these on a Case A6 combine would say this would be more than generous.

Sounds like a fun project though.

Nathan does it have a clutch on it? It all depends, has it been sitting outside for very long? parts can get expensive, Im rebuilding one right know and have some money rapped up into already with pistons and connecting rods

I've got one sitting in the shed. Bought from a neighbor 40 years ago, about. Paid $50. Was going to build a tractor also but never have. Just like to hear the sound of the straight pipe occasionally. Did put it in a 170 JD skidsteer but not enough power.

Was the exhaust pipe pointed upwards on yours. If so the rebuild/getting it to turn over could be expensive.

Have fun.
Roger

What kind of a clutch do you mean? If you mean the gear reduction system, no. I don't know how long it's been outside, but long enough, I guess.

I was HOPING that if I got it loosened up I wouldn't have to replace pistons, connecting rods, etc. Maybe that's just wishful thinking...

Thanks a lot,
Nathan

Nathan you might get lucky and get it freed up but 35.00 doesn,t sound to bad if you can get it freed up and running.

Even if you can't get it unstuck, you won't get hurt for $35. It's worth that just for parts.

I agree. Even if it ends up just being a parts motor, you can easily get $35 back out of it, and probably have some fun along the way....

And the fun of trying. Sometimes the journey is better than the destination.
