I have an 860 that I am going to put the single wire alternator on, I want to leave it as a positive ground since my 850 is a 12 volt positive ground and I don't want any jumper cable screw ups at some point. The problem I am faceing is the 850 has a generator so I can't compare the wireing. I want to be sure that I don't have to make any wireing changes to the alternators installation other then hooking the alternator return to the negative as opposed to the positive terminal. Thanks guys Dave

While positive-ground alternators are available, they're not real common and you'll pay more for it.

I'd go with a negative-ground conversion.

Like George says, your 12V pos ground 850 with generator should be changed, too. Finding a pos ground alternator for the 860 can be done, but then you have two oddballs instead of just one. Do the neg ground on the 860, and consider a neg ground regulator from a X01 diesel for the 850. Swap the ammeter leads, install and polarize the neg ground VR, and go.

This is news to me. Your tractor should be 6 volt positive ground originally. When the 801 series came out they went to 12 volt neg ground.

The 801 was 12 V negative ground ONLY on the diesel models. The gas 801's were still 6 V positive ground.

Why don't you play safe ? transform your 850 in 12 V negative ground and be universal ! You just have to polarize the generator, reverse polarity on the ammeter, ... By the way, with your 12 V positive ground, did you respect the polarity of your coil, i mean the spark jumps from central electrode to the ground electrode ? if it is not polarized correctly, you will observe central electrode erosion.
Just my 2 cents. Rlach

Can't wire a alternator to a positive ground system. You have to change it over to negative ground system. I don't know if Ford uses a charge rate switch (three position, lights, low, high charge switch). If they do, you would have to replace it with a regular light switch.
Course, if you want to try to hook it up to positive ground. Make sure you have a spare alternator and enough wire to rewire the tractor when your done.
