Good day folks,

Well, found something interesting speckled all over the hood, pulley, and fenders of my John Deere R this morning. Dad's had her hooked up to a hydraulic log splitter the past couple of weeks so I haven't had a chance to see her till today. Turns out she's been throwin oil out the exhaust stack recently. Now, I've had the suspicion that it's needed a ring job but now I believe it's proof positive. My question for y'all is this; does J.D. or some other company still sell ring sets for the "R"? I've heard talk that they don't sell the pistons for them anymore but I didn't know about the rings. I sure hope they do because the alternative is not one that I want to deal with, especially around Christmas time. Thanks a whole lot and God bless.

That was discussed a few months ago. Some diesels in good shape throw oil out the stack when not working hard. Seems that there is not enough pressure to press piston rings against the walls. Hopefully a diesel expert will answer you.

It may not be as bad as you think. If all its done is run a splitter it probably hasn't even gotten up to temperature. If the engine is just loafing along on a cold day you may be seeing some condensation mixed with some soot and unburned fuel. Try taking the tractor out and working it hard for an hour or so and it will probably clean up some. This is not to say that the engine may not need some attention, but I wouldn't jump right into an overhaul. Deere and a number of aftermarket sources make pistons and rings for your R. Start saving up your pennies, to fix it right ain't going to be cheap.Maybe you can get your dad to spring for a set of pistons and rings under the Christmas tree for you.(tractor rent to run the splitter)

If its soot/fuel, will be much thinner than oil (more like black diesel). If you haven't been burning oil under load up to now, I would suspect soot/fuel, and not get too concerned until you work it hard again and see what happens.
