Yes, I know, its me again! Some of you guys beat me up a little when I made the comment that I didn't like people touching my tractor.

I own a couple of tractors that are near 60 years old. I use them for mowing and blading and enjoy
them for that reason. If I took them to a tractor show, most folks would wonder why I bothered.

The tractor that I take to shows, folks really enjoy looking at and ask lots of questions. The
tractor is an orchard model. I remember one time a lady that was in her late 80's came up to me and said "who do you think you are fooling, they
never made tractors that look like that"! I live in an area where there are no orchards, or those kinds of tractors. Obviously, I can't work this tractor where it was intended.

I used to restore cars, I like tractors a lot better then any car I ever owned. I have judged cars at shows. I always gave the guy that drove his car to the show as many credits as the guy who rolled his car out of a trailer. If the guy that drove missed getting some bugs wiped off the front, that didn't bother me. I always had a lot of respect for the guy who did the work himself.
He may have a poor paint job and body work, but he did the best he could. Often times it was a father son project, first time they had ever done a car. I made a point to always compliment them for their efforts even though they didn't stand a chance of winning a trophy.

I don't like to have my tractor judged, and I don't care about the trophies. I do enjoy the conversations with people, thats why I do this.
I even enjoyed getting told off by the old lady!

I kind of look at it this way, I am the caretaker
of the tractors that I have for a very short period in geological time. I just hope that someone else will take care of them when I am gone.

I LIKE PEOPLE THAT LIKE TRACTORS! MERRY CHRISTMAS

I had this little tractor to several shows this year. Most folks just walked around but there was one young fellow that sat in the seat, etc. I asked his parents how old he was. This young lad was the age I was when I drove a C just like it!

Yes I worry about someone messing something up or getting hurt, but seeing that young man sitting on my 73 year old tractor was kinda neat.:-)

Dunno,
I see a lot of guys go through a lot of dough and a lot of hours making their tractor look as good as or even better than new. And I enjoy seeing them and yaking with the owners. About how they brought it back from the dead or how this was their Grand Dad's and he bought it new and he gave it to them and he restored it. I guess that's why I go to a bunch of different shows and auctions every year. Secretly though, the tractors I like the best are the ones that still have a little manure or mud on them. Put me onto whole row of perfectly restored
Farmall Hs or Ford Ns or JD or Allis Bs. The one I'll ususally go talk to the owner about is the one with a few dings or scratches. He'll tell you he just got done cutting some limbs with his cordwood saw or plowing his daughter's garden or bush hogging the road banks or mowing some hay with it.
Sometimes it kind of grieves me to see so many old tractors just sitting around with all that pretty paint on them and hardly ever taken out of the garage.
They remind me of my nephew - big strapping 16 year old who hasn't anything to do except stay in the house and play video games.
If he was mine I'd have him out there getting a little dirty and sweating some and maybe a getting a couple scratched knuckles. I'd have him working. Just like I do my tractors...

I love to see a nice tractor as much as the next guy and I'm a stickler for detail. I like to see as much accurate detail as possible, but at the same time I have respect for those who really try and I can appreciate tractors that are are rescued. But I hope I never attend a show where tractors are judged. I saw one tractor that was scored low because the paint on the starting crank was chipped from starting it. Get real. If we're going to start doing that, then only the very rich will be able to take part.

Frank, I saw this sign at a show:

Don't run your fingers over my tractor and I won't run my tractor over your fingers.

I respect other people's tractors that they have worked hard to make nice.

I can tell you are a person who respects the property of others and you expect the same courtesy from them - nothing wrong with that. Now I don't mind if someone rests their foot on the drawbar and puts their arm on the seat while they are talking, but its the pulling on wires and twisting on radiator caps that I don't like.

At our local show there are a few guys that put up ropes around their tractors on display. Most don't though.
Nobody seems to think anything about it one way or the other. Tractor owner's choice. Do whatever you think is best.

I agree with you on the not touching another tractor. I have caught people trying to pull the emblomes off the hood of a Furguson that I used to have. I have seen people open gas tank caps and put bubble gum inside. I even watched a kid with his parents right next to him climb up on a John Deere D and walk down the hood and jump off the nose, its a good thing that wasn't my tractor there would probably have been a fight... I really enjoy going to shows and like you have an orchard tractor that people were I live have never seen and love talking to the people I meet but it is just rude to walk up and put your hands on somebody elses property. I was having an auction before I moved and sold off a few of the tractors I had and ended up having to kick a man off my property after I caught him twice adjusting the carborator on my Farmall C.
