Have a Ford 4000 industrial. Paid a fellow to replace the clutch. Problem is that now it will not release. The fellow who rebuilt it said it had rusted to the flywheel. He "fixed" it once. I then burnished it but still have the same problem. Some days it works fine but when it sticks, it is a bear to get out of gear. If tractor is parked in neutral, then the problem is cannot get into gear. Is this a weak pressure plate problem? Or possibly the fellow put the wrong plate in when rebuilding?

Thanks for all the input-hopefully I'll get it unstuck without having to split it.

Check if you see any drops of oil at the cotter pin drain under the bell housing, if you do then the front trans. shaft seal is dripping oil onto the clutch disc and making it stick, a single clutch has 1 seal and a live pto double clutch has 2 seals along with the disc to replace when split.

Your lined clutch plate may be sprung, bent, or just simply not flat. The pressure plate only backs off from the lined plate a small distance, so if the lined plate is not flat and true, or the thickness varies from one point to another, part of the plate will remain in contact with the flywheel and pressure plate when it should be completely released. The clutch will then "drag", and shifting will be difficult. However, the clutch will perform under a load. At our shop, we have seen some really crappy rebuilt plates lately. I have made it a point to check the thickness of the plates at numerous points around the lined area with a micrometer, and then temporarily place the lined plate on the transmission input shaft, and spin it by hand to check for wobble. These may seem like extreme measures, but a little checking sure beats having a poorly functioning clutch, or having to split the tractor again.

Reducing your pedal "free travel" to the minimum side of spec's may help some.

Alternately, you may have a defective or improperly adjusted pressure plate.

Thats a FORD for-ya, I'll bet theres nothing put in wrong,If you live in a "Damp" area of the country, and keep it outside, try pushing the clutch pedal down and wedgeing a piece of 2x4 between the pedal and the floor board when your not useing it. If you don't the disc WILL stick to the flywheel. LOL Jim in N M
