elongated holes in rim

I am restoring an old tractor that was run a short distance with loose lug nuts. The holes
in rim are close to an inch in diameter with a beveled edge. Finding another rim is not very likely, so what are my options?

I can build up the edges with a wirefeed welder and grind off, but my concern is keeping all the holes exactly centered, that seems like the tough part!

My billfold won't allow me to take it to a machine shop.

Check with some local dealers, parts stores,or tire dealers for larger outside diameter nuts. I have bought 1/2 thread lug nuts that take a 1 1/8 socket. Many other sizes are available.

Just use washers with the nuts. Retighten them several times and you should be "good to go" Had the Duals come off a Chevy truck one time. broke several studs. I put in new studs new nuts and carried the wrench in the cab. Hauled silage and tightened them every load for a day or two till they stayed tight. pitty the poor fool that ever has to remove them!

Hi Terry,

Here's one possible solution. Gemplers has 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10 hole rings available.

I've got these on the front of my ol' chevy dually. I only use it for heavy work like hauling hay or gravel or wood, so I don't go that fast...about 60 or so. They work great. Good luck!

I like that idea a whole lot better than the one I was trying to figure out how to explain.

That would be my recommendation as well.

Are there no alternative holes you can use? My steel rims are drilled with lots of holes for various lug patterns and I have just used more appropriate holes. Are the bevels wear, or for a countersunk head?
What percentage of lugs were run loose? If 100%, I would possibly drill new holes and electric weld these ovals in completely (afterwards), as my welding would not be as easy to drill as the original rim. Make a jig so that all holes can be aligned as carefully as possible - the time spent will be worth it!
If only a few, then repair. Fill in and start again, enlarge and weld in a bushing, or whatever you feel happiest doing.
As an amateur, I would probably use a 'practool' for enlarging 13mm holes to that size, while using a power tool of limited wattage.
Hope this helps.
Regards, RAB
