Guys be careful. Found out yesterday that a friend of mine flipped a tractor over on himself, killing him instantly. He had just bought the tractor, and was not familiar with them. but was trying to pull out tree stumps, and his two young children were helping him. Use your heads for something other than growing hair. THINK first. Could be you next.....

I found a website a while back that had summaries of agricultural accidents, state by state. I was amazed how many men in their 60's and 70's, faminers their whole lives, kill themselves on tractors. When I was growing up, I knew of three kids who rolled tractors. Two died, one got a broken leg. But they were around 12, and operating without much common sense or experience. I never heard of a grown man rolling a tractor back then. It only takes one bad decision, or a second of inattention to put one of these things on top of you. I think too many people associate low speed with increased safety. They just can't imagine a 35 HP slow moving tractor as being one of the most dangerous vehicles an inexperienced, unsuspecting person can operate. Like those jacked up SUV's and pickup trucks, tractors have a much more restrictive operating envelope than our trusty old family cars. If you don't respect that, they'll bite you. Gotta feel for that gent's family, such a shame. Reminders should always be appreciated. Thanks for passing this on, Andy.

Jim:

I've been hearing a tremendous amount about flipped over tractors. I'm not an experienced tractor operator, but have done a bit of accident report/recording at work and I'm, curious as to how a tractor gets flipped over backward so quickly. I understand the "leverage" principle and why loaders tip over, but how "fast" can a tractor flip over backward. It would seem that if the nose lifted, you could dump the clutch and bring it down. I'm not being critical. Just a novice with an interest in agricultural equipment. I too am sorry for Andy's loss.

May thanks

Gordon NH

I can only say that a tractor, like any other machine, should be operated with respect. I think a lot of tractors that are flipped over backwards were operated in too high a gear. If the machine has a low range, USE IT, and with just enough throttle to do the job. I have had many tractors start to rise but I had plenty of time to correct this. This may not have been the case, but just realize this and don't get in a hurry.

Its a shame when ever I hear this. All you have to do is look at a old tractor and you can see that if you hook it high its going to flip.

If you look at like say a Farmall H or M the swinging draw bar is actually attached to the tractor in front of the rear wheels. This pulls the front down when pulling. It would be very hard to flip one over by the draw bar. But lord help you if you hook to the axles.

Odds are he had hitched up to something other than the drawbar. That is if it went over backwards.

Andy,

Nope, three times! :>)

Sorry to hear about your friend; these darned things are dangerous if not operated correctly.

Allan
