While visiting the local Home Depot the other day, I took a look at the new lawn and garden tractors. Some of them are in the 20 HP range. My Farmall F-20 is considered to be about 20 HP. I wonder how well the Home Depot machines would pull the Farmall's 2-14 plow, or a 5-foot brush hog. Or maybe a corn picker.

20 HP is 20 HP. On the pto both the garden tractor and the field tractor would do the same amount of work per hour. The Farmall would rut a lawn to pieces and a garden tractor won't. A light weight garden tractor with R-4 tires isn't goint to out pull a heavier machine with R-1 tires on loose soil. Why are you comparing apples and oranges?

The difference is that electric motors, tractors, and industrial engines are rated on actual continuous power at a rated RPM. This is quite different than peak horsepower at a RPM where the engine is about to come apart.

Here is the deal the way I see it. These high hp lawn tractors are made to sell to ruch uppies who don't know sh$%. They are impressed by HP, and don't know you need weight to put it to the ground. Probably these tractor engines do produce the rated hp, but at some high rpm that will wear the engine out in a short 9 (relitivly) time. To get the torque and rpm of a real tractor engine you would have to gear them down, way down. A real tractor engine like your F 20 will run for thousands and thousands of hours at it's rated hp, these uppy tractors only have to last to mow the lawn for a few years before they throw them away and get a new one. The real lawn and garden tractors, made like around the 60s had maybe 10 or 12 hp engines and got the work done no problem, then the makers realized that hp could sell and now you have 30 hp tractors. Your F 20 will pull a number of them backwards, all at the same time, untill there is nothing left but the chain you hooked to them. And not even be warmed up doing it. And last for ever doing it too.

I recall several years ago, I had a lake cabin on a private road. The lake group got together to clear trees that were hanging over the road. One in the group had a 75-80 horse 4 wheeler and was pulling the brush/trees down to a brush pile. Couldn't move several of them, so I went and got my JD 50 w/45 loader. Not a problem moving any of it. Kid asked how much HP. Told him about 28. He was amazed. It's all in weight gears, and traction. Had one big weiner roast that night.

There are lots of ways to measure horsepower. Sports cars are measured stripped of everything possible (muffler, water pump, alternator, etc) and run at such high RPMs they come apart in a few seconds; but for those seconds they can produce the advertised HP. You'll never see that horsepower on the road. On the other hand, old tractors (and Farmalls in particular) were often underrated. Of course weight also has a lot to do with pulling power.

hp doesn't do the work, torque does!! Comapre that betweem them! Also there's a thing called "traction". :>) Robert

What you do is buy the 20hp garden tractor and install the engine from it in to your F-20. Then hook up your plow and see if it will pull it at your normal plowing depth. This has intrigued me also. The garden tractor engines are probably rated at brake hp and the F-20 is rated drawbar hp. Have fun.

If you put that 20 hp Engine in your F20 it would probably work quite well as the low hp tractor (F-20) has a tremendous mechanical advantage due to gearing etc. someone mounted a 12 Hp Kohler on a JD and ran a belt to the belt pulley and it pulled quite well it is all in the gearing!!
