C frame tool for replacing ball joints

I need to replace the lower ball joint on my Ford 250 Heavy Duty, four wheel drive pick up. The Chilton's manual says that I need a C frame tool to press the old ball joint and to press the new one in. Since it's a four wheel drive, it doesn't use control arms, it uses a cast iron steering knuckle. I called the local Ford dealer and they said they would be willing to part with one of theirs for about $500. A guy on e-bay is selling a "univeral" C frame tool for about $100.

Any experience with pressing lower ball joints in or out? Any experience with "universal" C frames?

Thanks,

Tom
