I have been looking at a John Deere A and a Farmall H. They both run great. How many H.P is the A? How many H.P is the H? Which tractor would be better for brush hogging and other chores around the farm such as hauling heavy trailers and plowing? Any help is greatly appreciated.

the h is more mechanically freindly than a late a mid production a's were less problem the h wont have much reserve power for a bush hog in any heavy growth and both lack a good low gear in soft groung an a is heavy and will sink fast the a will accept a 3 pth easier than the h might want to reconsider and look at other tractors they are not utility tractors like say oliver 55/550 and thay both lack live power so use overrun coupler good luck

This isn't answering your question, but I would pick a Ford 861 over either of your choices.

OK Martin , I'll give you my opinion. I've owned 3 John Deere "A"s , and have run my uncles "H" many many hours. The "A" will no doubt have more power/traction. Quite a difference when actually useing the two tractors. Lets start with the "A". For brush hogging , depending on what the conditions are , you will go through more shear pins , should you have shear pin protection on the brush hog. You will use more gas , and your ears will hurt/ring by the time your through. The john Deere also has a fast reverse. The only thing the fast reverse is good for is backing up distance. Snow plowing is a good example. Pros and cons about hand clutch. On the plus side , the "A" has better brakes , and much better gear selection. I personally like the "A" better. Now for the "H". The "H" is an all around , more user friendly tractor than the "A". It may be smaller , but will still do a good job brush hogging. Slower , more powerful reverse. More control in reverse. The forward gears are what I hate the most about the older farm-alls. Not a very good selection of gears. All gears , except for 5th , are slow. Fith is fast , with little power(not that the "A" is a power house in 6th). The "H" is easyer on the ears , shear pins , and gas. All in all , I think the "H" would be the better choice. And I'm not a farm-all fan.

I think it all depends on what year the JD A is, some of the earlier As did not have any more horsepower than an H, and an H with the overbore kit will outperform even the later As, unless the A has been tweaked a bit also. In actual working conditions, I doubt if you would notice much differance, The A is probably rated as a 3 plow tractor, while the H would be rated as a 2 plow tractor, but the H would probably pull 2 plows at a faster pace than the A with 3 plows, so at the end of the day each tractor would have covered an equal amount of ground. As far as mowing, bush hogging, etc, the H is a lot more friendly with the foot operated clutch. It's a tough call.

I have a JDA and a Super H and like them both. The JDA has a Saginaw 3 pt. hitch and this makes an excellent all-around using tractor. However, the same could be said for an H with a 3 pt. However, the A does have more power.

Of course get both. If you can't do that, consider the fact that the JD has a hand clutch and the H has a foot clutch. If you are doing anything that requires backing up and inching the clutch, you will grow to hate the JD. I have JD's and I really don't like the hand clutch when you are turned around trying to see where you are backing, but can't quite engage the clutch without turning back around. The H would be a lot better for backing. Other than that, both tractors are good stock and I would like to have them both.

I have to agree. The A will be better suited to plowing and pulling heavy loads, while the H will be much more convenient for bush hogging and light chore duty.

Dave wants them both but he is trying to justify the purchase with the missus. Since it is so near Christmas, Dave, you could try putting her name on the prettiest one. How big is your dog house?

The H is 26 HP and the A is 38 HP by the Neb. test as far as which one is better I don't know both are good tractors I'd guess its a matterof price and which color you like better. If it where me and I had the money I'd get both, one for most of the work and the other for times whenone was down/needing work. But I do have % tractors that run and 4 that I'm working on.
