Hello fellows, Boy its hard to admit failure -but here goes! Broke the 350 Farmall "Landfill"
at trany and engine and rebuilt it. Got it all back and running only to have it leak at the rear main seal. I noted when I put the main seal in that it was to long to match exactly when the 2 halves met. How the &%() do You do this job and succeed?.I have rebuilt many engines but none with the rag seal. I was afraid to trim it as it wud probably leak then too.Any help wud be aprec. when I try it again ---along toward spring when the bluebird sings???? All else went great and she sounds strong with the step pistons. John

I've always installed the new seal, then trim seal even with the cap and block with razor blade, then coat just the ends of the seal with a gasket sealer before putting back together. Another thought is that sometimes those wick type seals need to get saturated with oil before they start sealing good, so maybe if you wait awhile and see if it quits leaking before you go to the trouble of redoing it.

Thank you farmer Gene!! That makes my day --was hoping someone would suggest waiting a while. HI. I'll say a prayer every nite to the tractor fairy and hope for the best--Thats a big job in a small (12 x 20' ) shop with the mill and lathe in there. Tnx again.

Hi John,

Forgive my ignorance here, because I am not familiar with your engine. However, from your description, I'm assuming that you are working on a two piece wick seal?

Once the seal is worked down into the grooves, use a razor blade to peal 'er off flush with the cap & block and make sure there are no little 'strands' between the two matching metal surfaces (holding them apart).

The nice part about these types of seals is that you can replace 'em very easily.

If this isn't the type of seal you are dealing with, please disregard as I am totally guessing about your animal.

Allan

Hi Allen, Tnx for the info --well the seal is the wick type but not one that will be easy to replace on the IH 175 engine anyway. The top and bottom seal (wick) holders have small extrusions all around the inside which precludes rolling them out and a new one in. You must unbolt these carriers and removed the seal then replace it. To do this I have to split the tractor and remove clutch and flywheel and the pan to get them off the engine. Very discouraging to say the least as my shop is very small with a big tractor in the middle of it.Oh well!! tnx agn John

Some seals require trimming other need to be worked into place. Not familar with the 350 but right or wrong I usually do what looks right to me. Sometimes you can move the seals off the parting line which helps if you can achieve this.

Tnx Tim C, I never thought of trying to get them in with a slight rotation. But looks like that might help. Leak is not real bad but I don't (WON'T) have any when I am done if it takes me forever.Tnx again.
