Rusty,

"The timing could be slow".??? "The timing may be slow"?????

WHADDA MEAN, "The timing could be slow"????? ???

I don't want to be disrespectful to you Sir, but I think that you are far too conservative with your use of the adjective "slow". :>)

I had some time to work on the old sister this morning and the first thing I did was check the points. Surprisingly, they were very, very close to the .020 setting, so I just touched 'em up a little and then went after that timing.

I think if the timing had been set any slower that the engine would have been spinning backwards! LOL

I had to move that distributor quite some distance to get it to come in....but, Oh Boy! Does she ever pull now! Like a Farmall should! I'm one happy camper!!!

As an added bonus, I've been quite disappointed with this new muffler that the previous owner had installed prior to my buying the tractor. It just always seemed far too loud. Sounded like one of those old flat-head Ford trucks of years gone by.

But now, at idle she is quiet as a mouse and has that distinctive Farmall "ring" sound back in the exhaust.

Now, I think I better get after building those gussets before I break this old gal in two.

Thanks, & wish you were my neighbor,

Allan

I pickup a good used muffler any chance I can get when I find one with the IH Part number on it. They sound like a tractor with the IH muffler. The new ones they sound like a sick old nash

Thank you for the compliment Allan, It all comes with experience I guess. Years ago, the H that my dad owned was relegated to elevator and grain auger duty. While dad ran the cornpicker, my mother got the job of hauling in, and naturally was the one who had to start that H and get the auger going. To make things easier for mom, the pto on the H was left in gear, so all she had to do was start the tractor, and away it went, only problem was, the H didn't like to start this way, it would kick back against the starter, so dad retarded the timing a bit, no more problems. Untill I went to borrow the tractor so I could push the snow out of my driveway, it wouldn't hardly go downhill in roadgear. I grew up on this H, and knew it had more power than that, so when I finally made it to my place, the first thing I did was get a wrench and play with the timing. Needless to say, that tractor ran in roadgear all the way back to dads place.

That looks like a 706 muffler to me. Would be nice if someone would make the old style at an affordable price. Those old h,s just don,t sound right with the 2 inch muffler.

Delbert,

Exactly!! What were the outlets on those originals? Something like an inch or 1 1/4"?

You're right, they just had a sound of their own. Wonder if Case/IH still sells 'em?

Thanks for the comeback,

Allan
