Do you think Ford will go back into the tractor business again . The tractors New Holland are building have got more Fiat in them than Ford the new TSA has a Fiat back axle and a Iveco engine the only Ford designed tractor is the TB range which is not sold here in the UK or europe it would good to see Ford going back into tractors.

I believe that if Ford was to get into tractors again it would be of the smaller version, Like the cub cadet, Simplicity style that could be mass produced and where Ford would be able to buy engines from Kohler and or Briggs and Stratton. that way they would not have to put up engineering money for engine development/production. By the Way I work about 2 miles from the old Ford tractor development building, it was torn down about 10 years ago and now a Home Depot and strip malls occupy that large land space, Very sad, Because Our manufacturing base continues to be moved overseas.

Certainly they will not start up an ag division.

Anything is possible, and they could buy out one of the current ag companies if they see it as a good investment some years down the road. Big companies always buy others to diversify, and then when the floor fall out from under they sell off divisions to 'work with the core business'. But they certainly will never fire up tooling on their own & start up an ag division from scratch. Not ever.

Fiat is also having $$$ troubles, and like Ford in the 80s, they are spending less on the ag divisions & trying to shore up their auto divisions.

Will be intersting.

I could not fathom Ford making the investment in tooling and engineering to get back in the tractor business. To get into impliments also would cost another fortune. With the move toward multinational corporations and outsourcing as well as the declining number of customers (farmers) just dont see it. I once read once that it cost between 75 and 150 million dollars to bring a completely new engine design from conception to application, even if a whole tractor line could be engineered for that from scratch they would have to corner the market to recoup the investment in any reasonable length of time. Even the 'new' designs use a lot of off the shelf or improved design parts. Ford sold everything when they got out. From an investment standpoint they would be much better off to buy na exisitng brand and equioment line and put their name on it. Cant see this happening either, would any of the major companies would cost in the billions of dollars. Then they would need a dealer and support network. Just not enough money in it. Cat tried to break in a few years ago (and they focused on the high profit end of the market) and that experiemtn didnt last long. And they had everything already on the shelf except the 'accesory stuff' like 3 point hitches. Cat stock has almost doubled in price since they sold their Challenger name and line to AGCO (they kept the profitable part (making the platform and power unit). It would be the one of the best things to happen to farmers if Ford would but it would be one of the worst business decisions Ford could make.

The only reason Ford made tractors in the first place was because it was a cause dear to ol' Henry's heart. He's been dead for 55 years. I don't think the tractor business was ever much of a money maker for FoMoCo so I doubt they will go back to it now.

I had a Fiat car once. Worst car buying decision of my life. It was NEVER on the road for 3 consecutive weeks without a breakdown. You don't see any old Fiat's on the road now, either. Why is that, Marco?

Marco, I have read on this very site that FIAT stands for "fix it again Tony". Your interpretation of the FIAT name must be in error.

That's why you don't see the name Fiat on much of anything new. The salesman at our local dealership told us that Fiat now owns or owns major portions of about 10 different equipment lines but hasn't put their name on any of it because of their bad reputation. They really screwed up the Allis Chalmers line of heavy equipment, I'm just wating to see what else they screw up. Just my .02
