FLAIL MOWERS???

Hello all. I would like a few opinions on flail mowers. Brands, price, etc. I have 6 acres to keep groomed. I have developed it into a park like setting and I figure that rather than buying a brush hog and a finish mower, I could probably buy a single flail mower to do the job of the other two mowers for near the same price. Any thoughts greatly appreciated. I have been told that a flail mower does a much nicer job than the other two types of mowers as well. Is the up-keep of a flail expensive? How much are a set of blades and how often do you replace them. I am looking for a 72" model. I own a Ford 3600 diesel, will the tractor run this mower? Thanks again for all replies!!

A flail will allow you to mow high grass and leave behind an even layer of mulched clippings because unlike a rotary mower, it doesn't windrow material. I use an 8 foot Seppi for land clearing, a 7 foot Rears for orchard work, and my favorite is a 5 foot TriMax that front mounts on a reversible tractor. It leaves a pasture looking like a golf course.

I have a old mott flail mower and I use it to mow pasture, blackberries, and a couple of acres of park like setting, it works great for all of them. I buy blades from flailmaster (www.flailmaster.com) and they are 67 cents each.

I use a Ford 6 1/2' flail mower..

I can tell you that it takes AT LEAST 35 horse power to run it satisfactorily...

The knives are about $2.oo to $2.50 a piece ( 39 on mine ). I like it for pasture mowing...it does a much better job than even a bush hog with sharp blades. It WILL cit close to the ground, but does not do as good a job as a finish mower--but it would do, and ya don't have to sharpen any blades.. I would think that if you are just cutting tall grass, the knives would last for several hundred acres...you can re-sharpen them easily, on the mower, when they get dull.. I mow about 10 acres (lawn) with a 6' 372 Woods, and it does a very nice cutting job...Not nearly as "Power-Hungry" as the flail...but does have it's limits, unless it is a REAR Discharge type... I put Ford Intake valve springs in each wheel spindle, to let it "float"..!!!! Take your pick...Find someone using them, and look at the job they are doing..

Terry,

Are you sure you need two mowers? With only six acres to maintain, I would think that you should be able to do that with just a finishing mower. Once you smooth out the area to be mowed with a brush mower and some manual grubbing, you ought to be able simply to mow grass.

Although I have about 150 acres on my farm, I maintain a "lawn" of about 5 or 6 acres around the 3 houses and two barns that on the farm. I maintain all of that "lawn" area with my finishing mower and a 42" riding lawnmower. I live in Middle Tennessee, so I only have to mow grass for about 8 months out of the year. I mow weekly and it takes me about 6 hours to do the whole thing. When I can convince my wife to ride the lawn mower while I use the finishing mower with my Ford 2000, I can cut my clock hours significantly. Oh, by the way, I use a Bush Hog brand finishing mower that is six feet wide.

Good Luck,

Tom

nope ya cant buy a single flail to do the job of both, just like rotory mowers there are brush flail mowers and finish flail mowers. the ones ya see along the side of the highway usualy are brush type heavy duty flails, they can chop up brush up to 3 inch dia often, but they do a terrible job on grass, often they just lay it down rather than cut it. on the other hand there are finish cut flails, my father bought one of these not knowing the difference, it cut real nice on grass, but soon destroyed itself on heavy briars and light brush. ya need one of each, no way around it
