Very tragic indeed, let this be a lesson to all of us.
Another thing to make note of, and I am not trying to be sarcastic, but the article states that he was using a front end loader, and the front axle of the tractor broke while going up an embankment. It appears to me that he was doing something that he should not have been doing. I sympathize for the family and friends who have just lost a loved one. Let's all be very carefull, and follow the rules when using a tractor and loader.

Of course none of us know the details about exactly what happened, but has anyone ever heard of an instance where a front axle breaks while using a loader, either properly or improperly?

It would seem that if an axle or spindle breaks due to metal fatigue, overloading, homemade loader mounts or whatever reason, it could cause a rollover even on level ground, especially if the loader was raised when the failure occurred.

N series Ford tractors. People love mounting loaders on them and the tractor just can't handle it. The lucky ones just wear out their front end at record pace, the unlucky ones snap a front axle.

Tony, only industrial tractor have fronts, strong enough to really support a front loader. They work kind of like a seesaw, when you lift up something heavy it has all that weight, and transfers an equal amount off of the rear wheels to the front wheels. I stretch out my backhoe and fill it with dirt, sometimes the rear tires still get up off the ground when lifting. Thats the reason Caterpillar started mounting the engines in the rear, for a counter balance. alvinnms
