So will the tractor run ok if I use the same head and put on a gas manifold or what would be the right way to do it? The tractor is real sharp but the engine was stuck. What is the best way for me to proceed? I am going to install new sleeves and pistons.

The casting itself in the distillate head was different, as were the valves themselves. Valves were shorter because the combustion chamber in the head was larger. It'll run fine with a gas manifold on gas, just be a little down on power from what a gas head would be.... maybe 1-2 HP. You might want to find a set of High Altitude sleeves & pistons (high compression) to make up some of the difference since your replacing them anyhow.

I see all these engine kits for stepped head pistons. My pistons were flat. Are they speaking about the cavity in the head when they say stepped head. I am having trouble making sure I will be ordering the right parts. Need a little more info. thanks.

IH offered engines equipped to operate at higher elevations, typically 5000 and 8000 ft elevations, where the air was thinner. This option was just pistons with a flat-topped higher level on the piston, about 1/4" to 5/16" for the 5000 ft, and maybe 3/8" to 1/2" for the 8000 ft versions. That's what they mean when saying "Stepped Head". This raised surface increases compression pressure and boosts HP especially at sea level or lower elevations. Dad had 5000 ft elevation 4" pistons put in His '51 M in about 1957 or 1958 and it would walk away and hide from His Super M-TA. Even the IH Firecrater pistons were available in higher elevation styles. With a distillate head I'd run them with the gas manifolds on gasoline.
