I have been working on refurbishing my John Deere MT. My tractor does not have a water pump anywhere. How does this cooling system work without a pump? Heat causes the fluid to circulate? Or is mine missing something? Any help would be greatly appreciated.Adam,

As stated below premixing the anti-freeze is a must. Tried it once without it and it got quite warm until things got mixed up. The problem is that anti-freeze is much heavier than water and requires more heat to get it moving.

My Kubota has the same system, no water pump, just circulation due to hot water displacing cool in the radiator. Also no cavitation due to water pump impellers. Keep the radiator fins free of trash, change the coolant and flush regularly to stop furring and sediment build up. Good luck, have fun.

Old is correct, your engine would not have a waterpump. When your M was made, the John Deeres were still using a "Thermosyphon" cooling system. In priciple (as old said), hot water rises, and cold water sinks, and with some good enginnering, this made the water circulate through the engine. The water will not begin moving until things start getting warm.

Yes, you will want to make sure the radiator is full, so the water will circulate. Also, I've heard of problems with cooling on the M tractors, if you do not pre-mix the antifreeze before filling, and if you have too much antifreeze with the water. I cannot give specifics. You may want to do a search on that through the old JD board archives for advice, or just ask again.

Good luck,
Brandon

Yes it uses the pricipal that hot goes up cold goes down, it work very well if the engine is set up that way. But don't try it on an engine that has a water pump it doesn't work. Hope this helps you a little.
By the way that type of system doesn't work right if you are low on coolant.
