I have advertized 2 antique tractors on the web in the past month. Offers to buy them come from West Africa. They are ready to send you cashiers checks for more than the amount you want, etc..
I suspect that most everyone that advertizes tractors for sale gets these-am I right?
How does this scam work?

Here the content of an E-mail I received about a tractor I have for sale. Sounds too good to be true! His Name is even Steve Smith, How original.

Hello,
It sound so nice in going through various web-site,cos through the process of my searching i simply found the placement of your advert on your 1946 Farmall B Culti-Vision.for sale
by you for $1800
.and i think i'm capable of the payment. So i'm mailing you to reach a good compromise
on the procedure of my payment,so that I can have a store manager to issue a certified cashier's check or
money order Drawn from US Bank for you in regards of the payment ,this was due to a cancellation of an order i just made with a store ealier in USA.More importantly I will make adequate arrangement as regards shipping to my location in England, cos i've an underground private shipping company based in Egland as well. They have always been in charge of the pick up of all my goods (They have been so striaght forward and delligent in picking up of goods for me) . With due respect you can as well have the director of the shipping agency emailed at(oceanic_plc@deliveryman.com) speak to "Mr Steven Sester".if only you are also intrested in selling 1946 Farmall B Culti-Vision.for me. So i will be be very delightful if only you can accept my offer and payment will commence immediately , please mail me
your contact info i.e (Name to be written on the money order or cert. cashier's check,Address and Telephone number) so that I can have the store manager to issue a cashier's
check or money order on your name as regards the payment.Attachment of the picture will be needed.
Regards SMITH.

I read about this on retiredtractors.com classified ads page(this site takes a long time to load over dial up but is a pretty neat JD site).

Apparently, the "buyer" will contact you saying he is interested, and that someone in the states owes him some money, that he will get that person to give you a check, and you wire him the (sizeable)difference to Africa. Sometimes they may offer you some money to organize shipping for the tractor as well. Then you lose your tractor and the money.

Like Paul says, it's hard to scam a scammer. Internet fraud is about the least of the government's worries in much of Africa, and odds are the scammers are probably pretty wealthy from a long career of scamming American suckers and can pay their way out of any trouble.

My point is - the next time someone offers you more than asking price for a tractor thats total production was over a couple hundred thousand that is a red flag.

Good luck, I don't think they sell Vaseline in Africa!)

Something I almost got stung on...

Years back a (former) friend said that he had an opportunity for me to earn $1000 in three weeks for a $6000 loan. He knew someone who was starting a business and needed some extra working capital to get the business rolling. My naiveté is a discussion for another day, but, I said O.K. and I want a promissory note. I got a promissory note in my friends name (who had no personal assets) and the name of the (soon to fail) business.

Three weeks later I got a check for $7000 and I thought great. I deposited the check and a couple of days later it bounced. I went to the (former) friend and say look at this. Make it good or I'm going after you. He said that he had nothing and good luck trying to collect. I was furious.

The guy offered to make payments. I said O.K. and he started to drop off $50 or $100 for a couple of days. Then it stopped. I went to a collection agency and the first thing they asked was if I accepted any payments. After I said yes, he said too bad. This guy refered me to the County States Attorney (for whom I had previously done some free network consulting). I found out that the guy was selling land he had inherited to get himself out of the hole and he told me when the settlement was going to happen. I met the guy at the bank and collected the balance due in cash.

This story turned out O.K., but I almost got screwed. Like the old saying "If you have a friend you don't want to see again, loan them money." If I get another bounced check it will be no more Mr. Nice Guy. I don't mind helping a guy out when he's down, but if it's going to be three months, don't tell me three weeks.

This all brings up the question in my mind- when is a cashier's check not a cashier's check? I thought that a cashier's check was as good as cash. If the bank gives you green, fluffy dollars for a cashier's check, then why would you be obliged to return the money? Wouldn't it be the bank's problem?

Now, if it is a counterfeit check, that is another story. But if the check is issued by a real bank, then how can it bounce?

The cashiers checks are forged, and are treated just like any other check that is no good.

One of these scams that somebody posted the crook wanted the return funds sent by Western Union. I imagine because you have to carry cash to WU. So just tell them to send you funds by WU.

I have had many of these, along with many other types. It is a money laundering deal I think. They send you a check for $4000 if you are asking $1500 or so for the tractor. They want to send you a check and you are supposed to send them $2500 back for shipping. You then find out that you are out all of that money and they just got alot richer. It's a scam. I just delete anything that I get form over sees. It's easier that way. Don't email them or anything. If you email them once, they will never stop trying. It is a scam.

you could always do like I did. I turned the check over to the bank and had it sent for collections prior to deposit or cashing, when it was found out to be bogus it got a lot of government people involved if you know what i mean.

Yes, I get them also, but this last ad that I put in I told them not to bother, cash only, so far it has worked. This scam works were that they send you the bogus cashiers check or money order, you cash it, and send them the difference, then in a few days your bank calls and tells you to come and pickup the bogus check, they want there money back, so you are out whatever you sent them back, plus returned check fees.

International checks take longer to clear: Sometimes folks, or even your bank, doesn't wait long enough:

If they are really fancy, they will take out a 'real' check & create a fake for you. When the bank calls, sure there is such a check, and you get your money. But, turns out yours is the fake copy, and the bank will want your money back - after some time.

Do you really think you can cheat a cheater?

when I had a tractor for sale a few months back I got a message like that. I told them that I would charge a 50% commission and hold the check two years before shipping (or returning any money to them!). Never heard from them again!
