What's the going price of big round bales of mixed upland brome / alfalfa hay in your area? We've ended up with about 200 extra bales that I need to set a price on. Nice hay, 1600 - 1800 pound bales, put up without rain, and row stacked in the field. Thanks.

USDA Weekly Hay Market Reports Most of these prices are "at the stack", no hauling cost included.

Thank you...this is a real help. I had priced this hay to one interested party @ 18.00 / bale, and without even looking was told, " that's way too high". After checking the market prices, that sounds like about half price.

I am currently selling alfalfa/orchard grass (or timothy) and straight timothy for $3.00 per small square. Round bales 4'x5' $15 for outside stored, and $25 for inside stored. Not much hay moving here. Normally I have sold 5-6000 sqaures and 1000 rolls by this time of year. Sold under 1000 squares and just over 300 rolls (and all but 200 of the squares went to Virginia. This year we have a huge surplus of poor quality spring and summer hay and a good crop of fall hay. Good hay will be scarce though. Nobody much buying and not seeing a lot of hay advertised. Hope some of you folks where hay is short start calling soon :-).

We have been selling 3rd cutting grass and alfalfa mix for $3.50 a 50# bale, which is a little higher than normal. 800# rounds sell for about $80 a ton. Seems like grass, alfalfa, and any mix sell for the same price. Oh, this is in Northern Indiana.

Hay prices are set locally by the supply in your area and the need for it.
Around here rolls of Bahia grass hay goes for $20 to $40 depending on size and quality. We truck alfalfa in from southern OK (600 miles) so it gets pricy. over $7.00 a 50 lb bale; less if you buy in quanity.
This year we seem to have a good supply of grass hay BUT if it does not get cool fast we will be in trouble and hay will go through the roof!!!
To explain--- Dairy farm neighbor just tilled under 100 acres of green grass and planted Rye grass for winter grazing. (normal practice for our area) We got a rain and a cool snap and it came up just right. Then now it has been hot and it is dying. If it does not get cool quick he will have 100 acres of dirt and will need to reseed and start over again. Spelled NEED HAY NOW!!!!

This year between 15-25 a roll in central ky. Square bales 2.00-3.00 depends on who wants and what they are feeding it to.

Hey guys,

I live in Middle Tennessee. Round bales of mixed grass that are about 1500 lb. go for about $25. Smaller round bales that are about 800 lb. go for about $15 to $20.

On the other hand, that same grass, when put up in 50 lb. square bales goes for about $2.50 per bale. I have small equipment so I put up all of my hay in square bales.

I usually supplement my cattle's feed in December thru March. I have ample pasture land and the grass actually holds out pretty well all winter, I just like to insure that the cows have plenty of feed.

It's just about the same situation in western Washington. Have a neighbor who puts up a lot of hay in round bales- sells all he can, tarps it, and in December or January, unrolls what hasn't sold and rebales into small squares and sells out immediately. It's worth about twice as much in small bales, for the horse folk.

Central Alberta last year was so dry here there was next to no hay. Lots of grainland got sacificed for silage. Two 30' swaths together equaled 20' on a normal year. 5x6 rounds were $80-$175per bale and straw was $60-$80 per bale. This year was an ok year, still dry but had satisfactory rain. 5x6 rounds grass mix $30-$40, alfalfa $35-$50.

In Eastern Washington 100.00 to 120.00 a ton! That is for OK Hay but you have to pick it up or they add 20.00 a ton to it unless you buy a double semi/load. I would love to get the priced the other guy quoted I could get rich re/selling it. Mark H.

In Minnesota, hay is quite high this year. I had to start feeding hay in August, so ended up buying an extra 350 Round bales. Paid $15 a bale for 1200 pound grass mix in August, and had to buy 75 bales last week and that was $20 a bale for some 1800 lb. canary hay that was ok feed. That was the only hay I could find in a 30 mile radious of me, and anything outside that 30 mile circle was $30-$65 a bale. I can't pay those prices and keep my cows. (I made 450 bales of my own hay as well.)
