I have two diesel tractors. One is a 45 horse Zetor and the other is and old Allis HD-6 crawler. Neither have a plug in for easier starting in cold weather. Is there an add-on product which would allow me to keep the two machines plugged in in the winter?

I don't know of a kit. However, I have drilled and tapped a hole in the intake manifold of several tractors and used a couple of different glow plugs with excellent results. On some units, you may have to remove the manifold to access a good location for the glow plug as they seem to be fairly long and need clearance in the manifold. I've tend to like the glow plugs for the Allis xt190/7000 etc.

You can get a 300 to 500 watt frost plug heater for use 24/7. Or a 1000 to 2500 watt external tank heater for fast warm ups in 1 to 2 hours. Being parked indoors out of the wind makes a huge differnce in heating times.

Those block heaters work great but use a lot of electricity left plugged in all the time. We don't need ours plugged in all the time so have a weatherproof thermostat mounted inline on the cord that we got from a place named farm tek I think. Have also used a timer in line on the cord which works good too. Lots of tractor dealers and tractor supply companies sell different heaters.

Hey Glen!!

I just hate doing this 'cause I know I come off sounding like a big-mouth.

However, almost all block heaters nowadays use a built in thermostatic switch. It is part of the heater wiring. Plug one in sometime and listen to it; it comes on and it shuts off. It does not run all the time, but rather regulates itself by the coolant temp.

They are cheaper to run than one might think.

Some of them do and some don't. We had trouble finding a new block mount heater for a older Cummins last year and it doesn't shut off. Wish it did. That is why we put the thermostat on. We probably got a older style but was the only one we could find after checking several places. We never heard it off. At least someone knows about the newer styles. :o)

They also make and sell block heaters that are magnetic and can be switched from one machine to the other as needed. You just stick 'em to the side of the block on the waterjacket area and plug it in. I doubt that they transfer as much heat as some other types but they are sure cheaper, easier and more versital.

You should be able to put either a frost plug heater, or a circulating tank type heater on the Allis, or I suppose you could get one of those magnetic block heaters, not as effective as the tank heater however. I am not familiar with the Zetor, so no comments on that one.
I kind of favor the tank type heaters myself.
