Spent 3 months searchin and searchin for the right tractor. First one for me. Went to an auction and the tractor started up, ran good everything worked looked good original condition. It is a ford 4000 1974. Only odd thing was oil was fresh and filter too. Won it for 3700.00 got it home and checked water and it was empty.???Filled it and ran it for about 5-10 min. happened to check oil again and it looked like sour cream.Freaked a little and took it to ford, guess what, freeze plugs in head600.00 later and she runs great used her all day today grading no problems. Be careful out there, I got real lucky, could a been cracked head or worse. Just wanted to share my experiance.

Seen a 4020 sell that ran great, had kerosene in the radiator had a cracked block, the kero burned on combustion and didnt smoke. Good scam, check those radiators.

My favorite scam at auction was a Miller welder I bought, with attached one cylinder engine (Tecumsah, as I recall). Checked the dipstick, oil looked normal. Some oil leakage around the bolt-on end cover. Couldn't check compression, it was battery start with no battery. Got it home, drained the oil, and removed end cover to replace gasket. There was no rod or piston! It had thrown a rod, and underside of head was gouged up, but not cracked. Crank journal was OK, too. Someone had gone to the trouble of removing the broken parts, replacing the end cover and gasket (which had torn during removal, hence the leak), and refilled to proper level with used oil. I don't know if this has a happy ending or not- I got the parts to repair the engine, but haven't got around to putting it together yet.

I did a repair like that a while back for $75.00 plus parts. There are freeze plugs on the head under the valve cover that corrode from lack of proper coolant.

You're right, it could've been worse .... but you mentioned "freeze plugs in the head" but no more details. Were the freeze plugs leaking or missing? What exactly was wrong? Reason I ask is that I can't figure out where the $600 went.

I've seen tractors intentionally drained for
that purpose or with almost no oil so they
wouldn't smoke at auctions.

The auctions I go to in Northern Ca. have the tractors started up at the begining of the inspection period and run till the auction starts, usually an hour or so. If a tractor's not running, something is wrong. It's up to you to figure it out. There will always be some people standing around discussing it, so keep your ears open. One may even have personal knowledge. Sometimes the staff will tell if asked.
