The most common cause I have seen of this is a bad ignition switch. It has happened to me a few times. The Lucas switch will do that. The clue here is that it only does this in neutral, and not in gear. Also remember that after it starts, it will keep the starter engaged, until you put the tractor in gear, and will reengage the starter when the lever with the neutral safety switch is again placed in neutral. To check this, take a multimeter, remove the switch, and check it for continuity through it's various functions. One lead on the power input terminal, and then go through the the various terminals and key positions. You should find definite positions to the switch if it is good. I bet that you will not. Although it is always good to check all the wires while you are at it. The switch is readily available from NH. Good luck.

Believe it or not, I have seen this 4 times in the last year! Remove the instrument cluster, remove the rat's nest, and repair the chewed up wires before they lead to a fire... The area above the fuel tank seems to be a preferred nesting spot for rodents and they love the taste of the insulation on the wires.

don't park it in gear. My 801 deisel did this during a drizzle one day, after a complete rebuild. It was in in gear when this happened. I was getting ready for work when I heard the starter dragging. My tractor had not started, but the starter had driven it forward into my pick-up, & the back tires were digging in the ground. It burnt the starter up, & ruined my new clutch. I spayed my fire extingisher on the clutch, it was smoking so badly.

I have seen this happen on Ford aotumotive products but never on a tractor. The solonoid hangs fire and completes the circuit to the starter and on the 3000 with the manual kill pushed back in it will start. I saw a Pinto burn down because of this. Better change out the starter solonoid!
