I have an engine I am working on and one of the pistons has all of the rings stuck into the grooves.
Is there some "home remedy" that I could soak the piston in to dissolve the carbon?

Thanks

Bruce:
If there is a NAPA auto parts store near you, go and get a can of Sea Foam. This product was developed to remove carbon from two-stroke engines. Pour it onto your rings and let it soak overnite. Come back and give them a tap or two with a small hammer and they should come loose. If not, soak them some more. NAPA also has this product in an aerosol can. It is called Deep Creep

Unless the rings are real hard to get I would break them out and but new ones.

I tap the rings gently with the wooden wire brush handle and spray them with Blaster or WD40. Sometimes they still break and then you can buy new ones. I have had good luck finding used rings or broken sets.

I have had pretty good luck spraying with penetrating oil and choke cleaners to loosen carbon buildup. Gene
