how much HP is needed?

I am looking to purchase a couple of larger items and need to verify the horses needed. A) a JD 220 centerfold disk 18'6" with 24" (I think) cone blades at 9" spaceing (B) a JD 7000 planter 8 rows 30" with wavy no-till coulters and liguid fertilizer tanks (not sure how big thou). Thanks.

There are several 18' 220's in my area. A 4430/4440 pulls them comfortably. I agree with the other post the soil type is a big factor.

80+ hp should pull the planter any time it's really fit to plant - less hp can do it depending on your soil/ conditions. But a tough spring would make that scary. (This year I planted all my corn with a 4 row, used 27hp tractor - but we had great conditions, and I had bigger hp if I needed....)

The disk you might pull with 80 hp in good light tillage conditions, might want 140hp in more difficult, heavier conditions. Hard to pin that one down exactly without knowing how it's used & soil type. Duals can be nice too - depending on conditions. Disking fall soybean ground is way different than in spring on plowed ground.

'Here' most people would use a 140 hp tractor with duals for both.....
