6 year old briggs & stratton (MTD Lawn Tractor) 14.5 horse electric start. Won't crank, charged battery and replaced solenoid. Turn key and solenoid rattles and top of starter turns very very slow, but doesn't rise and engage crank. Used power assist with charger and it labored to crank very very slow and then stops, not close to starting. Is it the starter?? (starter goes for $100)

Thanks for any help.

I had the same problem with my van recently, 20 miles from nowhere. I was unloading a 1500 gal tank from a trailer after a 100 mile trip and made several starts and stops in the process of unloading. Then nothing, no gauges, no power, no clicking of solenoid. The battery read 12v. We jumped it and it barely clicked and finally started. Sounded like it was killing the jump battery. I let it idle 30 minutes, started off and the motor quit. We jumped it again with a different vehicle with the same draining of power from the jump battery, and it finally cranked and started. I made it 100 miles to home and stopped the engine. The battery read 12v on a meter. I thought it was a hot shorted starter or solenoid, so in the morning I tried again and got nothing. Jumped it and no change. I replaced the starter and solenoid. One battery-no gauges or cranking. Double batteries-no gauges or cranking. As a last resort, I connected a new garden tractor battery to the other two. The engine started instantly. I remover the original battery and put in the small garden tractor battery. Problem gone!!! Drove around on the tractor battery two days, everything ok.
I put in a new battery and had no more problems.
I figure that the old (6-1/2 years) battery had a heart attack (short) and died within 5 minutes of the last use. That's why it was dragging down other older batteries. It never gave any indication of failing.
Try a known good battery before buying a starter.
Don't jump it, remove the old battery first.

Slowpoke is right on. The battery charger said the 12 volt battery was fully charged. Before I replaced the starter, I took a chance and replaced the battery and it started right up! Thanks for the good advice.

Thanks for the offer. Turns out it was as simple as replacing the battery (charger said fully charged). Thanks again.

The way the starter works is when it engages the top or drive pushes away from the engine so over time the upper bushing wears and allows the internal parts to lock against each other. The upper part of the starter is $50-60 and the bushing if you get somebody to order is $20-25. Had a machine shop put one in for $15. The other thing is you need to put juice right to the starter with your power source and see what it does, the cable at the starter might be loose or corroded.
