I am interested in purchasing a 4520 for loader work. A local dealer is asking $6500 for one with 8400 hours. This is a local, one owner tractor used to pull a hay cart. Its got 20.8x38" and 11.00x16" 4 rib (front) tires. The body has good tin and rough paint. What do you think? Is this a good price?

I would say the 4520 is a clumsy large tractor with an engine not ever designed or made for cold weather starting and loader use.....

I would also say the price is too high

I would also say the guy if he was using it to pull a hay cart was using the wrong tractor

Over 8000 hrs pulling a hay cart? that hay cart must have about 150,000 miles on it.It may be a good price and a good tractor but I'd find out a liitle more about the tractor. Don't take the dealers word for it.Ask for the phone # of the previous owner and talk to him about the tractor. Good luck with the tractor if you decide to buy it.

Imagine the condition of the hay cart, with all
that hauling. This was not one of Deere's hot
models, it got dropped, for the 4320. My Uncle,
who bought about twenty new generation Deere's, did not buy the '69 4520. He returned it, for a
second or third 4020, turbo, duals;said it was
clumsy. Hard to believe this Green Giant avoided
plowing, and heavy tillage work since new. I know
a guy who had one parked a year, while finding parts for the Finals, as the repair estimate was
about $5K. I question if these 122HP models had
planetary final drives, seems too early. I'd ask
the former owner, to his face, would he but it today, for the work you plan to do? Good luck.

The 4520 was NOT dropped for the 4320-it was upgraded to the 4620-the 4320 was basically a beefed-up 4020

The 4520 witch came out in 1969 was replace by the 4620 due to a bad air filter system that had a habit of catching on fire and destroying the engine. Other that that the 4520 and 4620 are almost identical. The 4320 came out after the 4520 but not as a replacement, it was to fill the hp gap between the 4020 and the 4520

Both the 4520 & 4620 models made their debut in
the later part of 1968. The 4520 was dropped, in favor of the 4320, with the 4020,4320,4620 made
until the 30 series debut, August 15,1972.

The 4520 was replaced by the 4620!! A neighbor had one of the first 4520's produced. It spent almost the first year in the shop, seems it had major flaws in the bell housing or transmission housing and leaked oil all over the clutch all the time. I think he traded it for a 4620 as soon as they came out.

All of the 10 and 20 series tractors from Waterloo had planetary rear ends! Including the 4520.
