I know there are countless messages like this in the archives but I don't think it hurts anything to be reminded during such a busy time of year. Just got word that a friend of the family was killed in another tractor rollover, everyone please say an extra prayer tonight... he had a large family and worked day and night to keep everyone happy, he will be missed. Also just today I saw a group of workers on my college campus running a rotovator w/o the rear guard, backing it up right to a sidewalk crowded with fellow students and driving away from them. With my farming experience I recognized that danger and gave a wide berth, other students, trusting that people know what they are doing might have been at the right place to catch a 100mph rock in the head today. So please, keep your guards on, especially when it could be endangering an innocent bystander that trusts you to keep them safe.

My neighbor just got his left hand cut off from his riding mower. He did some work on the tractor and disabled the shut-off switch under the seat. When he backed in a hole and rolled over, the blades kept going and took his hand off.

I know it's inconvenient to have those safety switches on your mower, but leave them there. You never know who else may want to use your machine.

I use a new snapper and it has all kinds of safety switches. I leave them alone because someday my 9 yr old son may want to mow the lawn.

Thanks for your post. My prayers are with your friend and family. I know a family here who lost not one, but two young sons in separate tractor rollovers. Everytime I drive pass their place I wonder how you live with that every day - it's got to be tough. I passed a neighbor's wife on the highway yesterday pulling a rake with her 3-4 year old son standing in the cab. You have to wonder?? Some risk is calculated but a lot of it is plain stupid! So many tragedies could be avoided if people would only THINK before doing such things. Statistics show that kids are at most risk on the farm. Everybody knows stories like this but "accidents" still happen. The sad part is most of these aren't accidents but brain fade.

You are right on target with letting us all know about the mishap and also about the folks using the rotovator on campus without a safety guard.

Many times, people don't take the time to just think, now what is worst thing that could happen if i do this on the tractor. Just some thought, and perhaps from reading a posting like yours will help them to avoid taking a risk.

Experience is a great teacher. However to learn about and understand those potential dangers, all of us need to keep reminding them and our self. Thanks for sharing. We will never know, however if one person remembers what you said, maybe he will think twice and put the guard back on that tiller or keep folks away from a rock throwing machine.

Many times I have chucked rocks and large pieces of wood from my bush hog. Never did not think too much about it until I read about state trooper who was killed when a rock flew from a tractor mowing the right of way and hit him in the head as he was driving by.
