Can a coil loose it's punch after it warms up? I've tried just about everything to keep my 2500B IH running but after it warms up it still starts to sputter like the timing is off or it isn't getting fuel. It isn't the fuel cap,We've put a short pipe farther into the fuel tank so it doesn't suck the crud from the bottom of the tank, taken out the point's and installed an electronic ignition for hotter spark.
It starts great and runs good for anywhere from 5-30 minutes then starts sputtering. after it cools a couple hours it will take off like a champ again.
I've all but ruled out vapor lock, also because I can't find any place where the Fuel line feels hot.
Any idea's out there?

Take the cable going to the distributor off of the coil and check inside the hole connection if there is a screw. Sometimes it comes loose.

Something that may help is to observe the coil at night(dark). Often you will see arcing between the terminals that indicate a cracked coil that only show up with increased temperature. Hope this helps.

I have a wisconsin 2 cyl. that would spit/sputter then quit, noticed the coil was so hot that it started pushing out the oil from inside the coil after an hour of running. So I replaced the coil with a brand new one for this engine and its still getting hot and sputtering, hot enough that you can't put your hand on it. One thing is that the coil is mounted horizontally instead of vertically could this be a problem. Thanks for any help. chris

You could hang the coil out in the air on a stick to see if it still gets hot. Duct tape works here. It's more likely that the coil is drawing too much current causing the heat. One way that could happen is if the wire to the points is shorted, or if the points themselves are shorted inside the distributor. Check with a meter for ground with the points open and the 6/12v to the coil disconnected. Another possibility is that a resistance wire between the start switch and the coil has been replaced with an ordinary wire.
Some cars use the resistance wire, I'm not sure about small engines.
