does anybody have info on the possibility that a 8 speed transmission would bold up and work behind the 242 cubic inch diesel engine. the tractor only came with the sos trans. I think that a 4 speed or 5 speed would fit that goes behind a 801 diesel but the 65 hp engine maybe to much for them.

I've never seen a 6000, except in pictures, but I would say that an 8 speed could not be fitted in the 6000. The early 2000 and 4000 should have been somewhat similar in layout, I think, to the 6000, and the 8 speed will not fit them. The 8 speeds from '65 and up had bellhousings cast to accept the starter on the right, while the 6000, if it was like the 2000/4000 would need a left hand starter. So to start with, it would not bolt, and who knows how many other problems. At least that's my thinking, BUT i may very well be wrong. If you want a working tractor, just about ANY other model would be the one. That's just my opinion, based on what I have heard about 6000's. Good luck.

Sam,
You have a difficult tractor to 'correct'. In '63,
Ford replaced the 6000's(red),giving the owners a
6000(blue). There were updates on updates on updates. Ford rebuilt the used red 6000's, they
sold poorly, bad stigma. The SoS was no fun also.
Why open a Pandora's Box, going retro tranny? You
always have an odd issue, unless the company had
developed an option. Going to something else of
that vintage, may prove easier, a 1650D Oliver? If you prefer blue, a 5000D(67 HP)w/8 speed? Good luck.
