Has anyone had fuel filters clog up on a disel tractor? I have a MF 250 and was running it yesterday when all of a sudden the RPM's went a little higher. It would run fast for a few seconds then go back to normal. It did this several times until it just died. I could not get it started again. I had just put 5 gallons of disel in it about an hour before this happened. I checked everything and everthing seems fine, it just want start. I hope it is the fuel filters. It has been a few years since I replaced them. Does this sound like it could be the problem??

Glad you found the problem and it was an easy fix.
Since I let a fuel pump freeze and burst several years ago I ALWAYS change my fuel filter in the fall whether it needs it or not. The $8 filter is much cheaper than the repair (at that time it cost $499 to repair the pump not counting time and labor). I strongly recommend that you change your fuel filters each fall or early winter.

Glad to hear your problem wasn't anything major. But Kyhayman is right-you should change filters at least once a year whether they need it or no, or next time you might not be so lucky!
Remember , filters are cheaper that a lot of other parts, not to mention labor.

Thanks to all that answered my question. Just to let you know, I changed the filters and got the air out of the system (I am glad I had the book) and the tractor fired up. I am so glad it was nothing major. The tractor has always fired up with one turn of the motor. So when it turns over a few times without starting, I know something is wrong. Thanks again for all of your answers.

A few years! since the you changed them. Definitely the first place to start. They are at least an annual change item whether you use the tractor or no. The filters are designed to react with water to block the flow when water conacts the filter media. Cans of fuel are especially bad because they always retain a tiny little bit of fuel which, when heated, expands and pushes out air, then when cooling at night air is drawn back in. As part of this moisture begins to condense.

Remember to bleed out the lines as per the manual after changing the filter.

It could be a number of very expensive things, but 90% of the time it's the filter, very common.

My combine fooled me, has a filter, but also has a screen back by the tank. Filter was fine, but junk floating below the screen would plug it - took 2 days of frayed nerves to track that down....

Paul- you have an F2, right? Besides the fuel bowl and filter next to the tank- there is a plastic filter inside the tank. That's why the filler neck is so big- to reach inside to the bottom of the tank to get the filter out and clean it. Either one can be a pain when they clog.

I'm thinking it is a sediment bowl with screen just outside the tank on the right, but I will keep your comments in mind for future problems. ;) Did seem like a real big filler cap!

I've had this same thing happen to both my Super 90 MF and my 4020 JD. Both times I replaced the filters, and they fired right up. Hope the same happens for you.

It sounds like a fuel problem. Try disconnecting the output line from the filter and see if you have fuel flow there. It's a good idea to keep a spare filter around as that is a needed item anyway.
