Red lovers, Are there any restoration books available for a Farmall B ? I am restoring a very good shape original tractor. Want to know about colors for Starter, Generator, Radiator, Shutters and screen in the grill. I am questioning the seat as it has two rubber straps to hold it up. The seat has an original spring with a bracket that has notches to raise or lower it. Is this all original?
What size should the rear tires be? It has 12.4-24 Good Year on it now. A couple friends say they are oversize for the tractor? The battery case looks home made and has no cover. Are the front and rear lights supposed to be red or black? What color is the light switch box supposed to be. What color is the radiator, Someone has painted everything red and with lots of paint. The oil and temp gauges are red. Enough for now. Will welcome any information that is available. Doug Bradenton, Fl.

Like gene b said, that book will be a big help. I restored a '40 B before that book came out, but I am not always a stickler for originality.
Basicly, everything was painted red at the factory except such things as the magneto, tires, steering wheel rim & seat cover.
A Farmall B is a good tractor to restore for a first timer, because everything is simple and the parts are small & light enough to handle with an engine lift. Those tires are a little oversized, but many people like oversize tires, do whatever looks best to your eye.

You need book called FARMALL LETTER SERIES TRACTORS by GUY FAY and ANDY KRAUSHAAR. This will answer almost all your questions except tires. What size are the rims as there were several sizes avail. DO they have the square shaped things to hold them to the center. You can get original type tires either 8.3 or 9.5 with the 45degree bars but first we need to know about rims you can e-mail for more info if needed. I have 6 Bs and one BN running now and 4 As Be glad to help gene b

Gene, Thanks for the information. Yes, the rims have a square recess where the rims are held to the center wheel by square headed bolts. Doug Stapleton

Doug,
Everything you mentioned should be painted red. If it is black now that means that it has been replaced with new or rebuilt units which came from the IH dealer painted black, but from the factory they were red. Starter, generator, radiator, carburetor, gear shift knob and gas caps are amoung the things most often seen black on older Farmalls because they were replaced and not repainted. DO NOT paint the spark plugs, plug wires and distributor cap or magneto cap. Take out the good spark plugs and put in old plugs for painting. Remove plug wires and dist. cap for painting. Mask off the plastic part of the coil and paint the rest red. Some of the magnetos were painted and some where not. Rebuilt magnetos were not painted but from what I have gathered, most units were painted at the factory. Mask off the glass part of all gauges and gas sediment bowl and paint the rest red. Mask the black rubber part of the steering wheel. Electrical box and switch knobs are red. Lights are red. All wireing is red. Hoses and belts are red. (Paint will come off the belts but they were painted at the factory also. Same with gear shift knob so most people don't bother painting the rubber gear shift knob.) Farmall sign on the grill is silver with a simi gloss black paint between the letters. Take your wheels off the tractor when you paint it and paint the rims separately. They are silver, front and back. The seat is red except for the (vinyl(not original) or canvas cover which was black or silver depending on the year of the tractor. Don't know what I missed but very little of the tractor was mask off and not painted from the factory. (It took to much time!) Go to your or buy a Farmall Letter Series Originality Guide book for placement of the decals. See page 32 for a good picture of the electrical box. Page 44 has a good picture of the distributor and engine on a Super C which is like the B. Good luck and if you have any questions pleas e-mail me. Ken.
