I broke my big brothers pto shaft yesterday on his ford 5000.So I'm blessed with repairing it,which is only the right thing to do!!My problem is he don't know what year model it is.Can anyone please tell me where the serial number is located???Also if anyone other than the ford tractor shop(THEY'RE AWFUL EXPENSIVE FOR THE SHOP REPAIRS IN MY AREA) has ran into any problems in replacing the shaft.Any help or advice is appreciated.

Right side of engine, on transmission bell housing behind fuel filters.

When you say "broke pto", did you snap the shaft off or is the damage internal?

Earnie,Thank-you for the serial # info. The tractor is about a hours drive but i'll get my brother to look it up.I broke the shaft its self about one and a half inches from the connecting end of it.I was bushhogging and sheared a pin and the drive shaft run down the bushhog an came uncoupled and it was frailing while i was reaching for the pto lever, clutch,an engine stop all at the same time. Man at the ford store printed me a parts list.It does not look to be that big of a project.I'm wondering about how big the gear it fits inside of is and if the bearings and stuff can can be installed through the plate on the bottom of differental? And by the way it's an selecto-matic

We had a 1965 5000, gear drive. I think, you can unbolt the for bolts on the out side and slide the old out and the new in. The NH dealer outta help you that much. Drain the oil first.

You might try posting on the ford board and put a "Bern-Help" in the tag line, he is a Ford mechanic.
