Apart from cost of cartridges in UK, I believe most people use the starting handle and a fuse as cartridge wadding can sometimes cause jamming problems, apparently. Personally seen the cartridges, but never yet seen one used. Probably seen hundreds started with the handle.

I NEVER load, until I check and cross check 3 different loading referances...then always reduce the maximun by 10%..... Mistakes are common in those manuals..!!

(quote)"Can anyone tell me the correct load/construction for the starting charge??"

NO, not with the little info that you have given. If you have reloading equipment then you should have gotten a "Reloader's Bible" or reloading manual that tells the specifics of each load!

Hull manufacturer, shot size, primer selection, wad manufacturer and style, target and shooting requirements, all these plus more specs factor into the equation!

.....and if you don't already know this.... why are you reloading this guys shells? I don't mean to be a smart-aleck here, but experimenting and random loading is not an option!

If you have already loaded shells before and know the variables that apply, then have the gun "proofed tested" by a competent gunsmith and then start with as light a charge as the reloaders manual suggests, for the hulls and wad that you plan on using!

Good luck and be extra careful! I have a 12G shotgun setting in the corner that has a golfball sized hole in the side of the barrel where a guy made a mistake and a piece of the barrel took the end of his thumb off (he's very lucky it didn't kill him or someone else)! I use it to show kids what happens when you do not pay attention to details!

If you see Buba here in east texas, please don't ask him his advise. He will take his 12 gauge out of the pickup and shoot your tractor, thinking he is helping you start it. :>)

A search for Marshall Field shotgun turned up nothing. Reloading is nothing to play around with. The only reloads that I shoot are my own and have been doing it for 40 yrs. Shotguns pose different problems such as Damascus barrels which are unsafe with any ammo.

Chris, the Field Marshal is a German built antique diesel tractor that is started by an explosive charge... and now you know the rest of the story!

OK, now that I know what we are talking about.... ;-)

What is the "make" of the engine... (i.e. the manufacturer of the engine) is it made by "Marshal" or whomever? Just wondering!

Some of the old WWII era airplanes were started this way also. This was way before my time, but I saw it demonstrated at an air show.

Sorry, you are wrong there. Built in Britain by Marshalls of Gainsborough, probably based on the Lanz design, but is a full diesel and so does not need a blow lamp to get it started like the semi-diesel of Lanz. Needs a lot of effort and a glowing taper - or a cartridge - to start it.

LOL, Never heard of a Field Marshal before! I figured it was something along the lines of a "Western Field" shotgun or something! I guess there is more than one way to "trip your trigger!" :-D

Oh well!
