Which of these is the best? I'll be using it on a
4x5 round hay baler. Both are diesel.

Had experience with a 175 diesel Allis, not directly with a 656 IH, but with a 966 IH (i assume they are similar, the 656 being about 30 horse smaller) and using the both on a bruah hog, like the IH much better, because of shifting back and forth easier, to me the allis seemed clumsy in smaller areas, but baling it would probably be ok. There both pretty good tractors, but i'd prefer the IH. But also consider what everyone else said about price and service, the 175 diesel is a pretty economical tractor to run.

I have run IH my entire life but have been very impressed with AC (my father-in-law runs them). Being they are both diesels I would weigh the purchase price and service after the sale and start writing a check. There is hardly a wrong answer.

I do not know which is the best tractor. I know that the 175 is a fine little 65 horse tractor. The hand clutch and live pto are great and the traction booster works well. I have had one of these since '81. It will stay here until I am gone. I am sure the red tractor is a fine one as well. Go with the one that you can get service and parts for easier.

D-17 was a 4-cyl. about 50 HP, (except the diesel, which was 6-cyl) and the live PTO was thru the hand clutch. Transmission was 4 X 2 for 8 forward/2 reverse speeds. Parts are still avail. but kinda pricy. 656 of course was 6-cyl, 60-65 HP, true live PTO, 5/1 transmission and with T/A was 10/2. 656 is pgysically larger, heavier, parts are maybe a little cheaper. I'd buy the red tractor, but then that's mostly what I've been around. And the 656 is probably about the same $$$$ as the D-17 too isn't it.

I would always say the IH656 because I'm am IH guy and I'm more familiar with IH parts and service, and I really don't know much about AC's.
No matter what you get, it will need to be fixed, sooner or later. If size, horsepower etc. are about the same, I'd suggest buying the one you think has the best parts and service support in your area.
