Back in the days when you went to the fair to see what was new in farm equipment, I remember the introduction of the number series of John Deere tractors. It was at the NY State Fair at Syracuse.
They had a 60 with power steering set up with a sheet metal disc printed to look like a telephone dial on the steering wheel. It had a ball bearing in it that you could insert your finger and "dial" the steering wheel around. The rolo~matic front wheels were set on a steel plate so the constant turning wouldn't dig a big hole.Them was the good old daze. Ed

I remember going to our county (4H) fairs, when I was little, and setting on the new tractors. The "highlight" of the 1968 fair was when my dad told me to get out of the John Deere combine cab, becouse I could get in it next week, when they delivered it to our farm. He had just bought it!

My highlight in 1968 was being drafted into the U.S. Army, and then learning the same things our guys are learning in Iraq. We pay, and have paid a heck of a price for our freedom. I can remember being wet and cold and scared and just thinking about crops growing and sunshine and the way cattle smell on grass, and especially the way a horse and saddle smell on a hot afternoon when you're checking cattle. Yeah, it is funny what we remember.

I just came back from a short stay in Vietnam. I don't recall seeing a single tractor in the rice paddies-just water buffalo and people in pointed hats. Not a lot of progress going on. I wasn't old enough to be there when you were, Larry, but I appreciate everyone who went. I was a little leary upon arrival but everyone in the country was very receptive and friendly to this strange American amongst them-I was in Hia Phong. I'm sure you didn't like it much but it really is a neat place today. ***I wasn't there, but I still care***
