I have a stupid question

I have recently purchased a tractor that is still a six volt positive ground tractor. How do I check the electrical circuit? With a negative ground I would touch the wire to a ground (metal) on the tractor and the probe to the circuit I am checking. With a positive ground what do I touch the wire to. Does it work the same for positive or negative ground?

Like is said, the only stupid question is the one you DON'T ask! I've nothing to add about the previous posts in using a meter or test lite. You likely know this but if you're not familiar with electrics, you might want to check the polarity (+/-) of the ignition coil wires. The wire from the ignition switch to the coil is (-/hot) and the wire from the coil to the distributor is (+/ground). The coil posts will be marked (+) and (-).

Yep. If you are using a voltmeter you would place the positive (red / +) lead in contact with ground on a positive ground vehicle and probe with the negative (black / -) lead.
If you are using a test lamp polarity does not matter.

Check the same way-the sparks just travel the opposite direction.
