I have a 1936 10/20 that will not idle. I have cleaned the carb already and everything else looks good. It will run only at full throttle. Anything less and it belches black smoke and eventually dies. Someone told me it could be the mag has a broken spring. I think it is either the air cleaner is stopped up or I am getting too much gas. What is the correct float setting? Any ideas welcome.

If it is belching black smoke, then it is definitely running rich. The question is why?

A broken mag spring could retard the spark enough to do it, but my money is on the fuel system someplace.

First of all check to make sure the float valve is shutting off completely.

I don't have the proper float level for you, but try lowering the float and see if it improves.

It may be a blocked intake, simply unhook the air supply at the carb and see if that does it.
