I just bought a bolens 1220 and the rearend skips. Can anyone give me some ideas as far as what it might be and how to fix it. I was told there was a lock or possibly a gear on the right side tire but I am not sure. Please help

The knob you're talking about looks like a big cast iron wing nut. It should be turned all the way in or out not left in an in between position. The Oliver/WFE dealer I worked for had Bolens from 1967 till he went out in the early 90's. Any tube frame rear end with a high/low shift will swap into your chassis if needed. Check bearing on main shaft, its a worm gear setup and if the bearings go bad it can allow the shaft to ride up it can skip.

Some of the older Bolens had a knob on the rear wheel hub that you could tighten/loosen the differential action with. For tough going you tightened it down, for mowing/close work you loosened it.Don't recall if the 1220 had it or not.Should be an obvious handle type knob on the rear hub, reachable from the seat if it does.
