I am look to buy a IH 3588. I heard that the early ones had transmission problems and lots of field repairs. Is this true and if so when did they get the problems resolved. Around what serial number would be safe.

I bought a 3588 new and still have it,no tranny problems 466 engine is one of IH best. The piovit pins in middle of tractor should be checked. I have put clutch and TA around 4500 hrs and thats about it for repairs. I pull 24 ft. cultivator with 25 ft. rolling basket 6-18 720 IH plow and you can't beat it drilling beans A good solid tractor.

I don't know of any specific date that the problems where resolved, more of a gradual improvement. Given the fact that these trctors are now all about 20 years old or older these problems have more likely then as not been repaired unless your looking at an extrememly low hour machine. Much like the old 560s, the problem machines have more or less weeded themselves out through salvage or overhaul.

Wayne, if you don't get an answer here, I suggest that you ask your question over on the Red Power Magazine forum. There are a couple guys over there (and sometimes they check in here too) who I think can give you good, reliable info. Look for Denny aka Dr. Evil and SDman, just to name 2 that come to mind, but there are also others there who will know about 3588's.
You will have to register, but it's free and only takes a minute.
