Tomorrow I'm putting a down payment on an Allis-Chalmers C. It has 6 volt, hydraulics, foot brakes, dozer blade, and the most odd thing to me is working radiator shutters. It's been sitting by the road for a while and I felt bad for it so I bought it. I'll have to take the tire chains off so I can drive it home. He said it runs good and thankfully they covered the mag and it has a rain cap on it. You guys know some specs of them? And some of the pros and cons of an Allis C (I'm a farmall guy that has an orange 'cold'!)What about the radiator shutters? Are they rare?

Thanks for the info. I'll probably be hanging around between the orange and red fourms. By the way, I got it home, and it's a 1948 Allis C.

I agree, you need to start hanging out on the orange page. These are great, simple tractors. To start with give it a tune up, grease everything, change all the oils, including the steering box and final drives. If the boot on the shift lever isn't good and it sits out in the rain you will have water in the transmission. For the transmission, since you have hydraulics, use "tractor lube" not 90 weight gear oil.

I think you will enjoy your tractor. I have 2 model C's. One with a narrow front and one with the adjustable wide front. I use them both, one for mowing the lawn and one with a cordwood saw.

The shutters aren't rare, the fact that they are working is rare. LOL

Most all small Allis have them. They are a bit finicky to work on and use but they were a neat idea.

My father has restored a B and a CA andthey are real nice little tractors. It is amazing what the little buggers can do. The C is a good one it has the better steering than the B. The CA is real nice but we are having problems with the hand clutch and have been told it will be costly to fix.

You will love your little Allis.

You should post over on the Allis forum if you have any specific questions.

Had a problem with handclutch on my CA. After I used it a few times while bushhogging the tractor wouldn't pull. I changed the springs in the handclutch and replaced them with die springs about the same size.
