Parts shipping?

Hey all.

I have to have a recent parts purchase shipped from San Diego, California, to Lexington (or roundabout rural area) Tennessee.

The package is 57 inches Long, 47 inches Wide and 10 inches High. Estimated weight is 150 pounds.

The cheapest quote so far is 226 bucks. UPS Oversized packages was around 300, and Fed Ex will only air ship it, wich was -way- out of reasonable shipping costs.

We're checking with small trucking companies now, but are there any avenues that are being overlooked? Who might be willing to deliver this to a private residence? I can unload it, and I'm sure it would either be loaded or dropped off at their terminal in San Diego. A tracking number is a must.

Thanks

Yes try a bus line like Greyhound. I had a large tractor rim shipped by them very reasonably. You probably will have to pick it up at their terminal though

We have developments.

My uncle is a local Fed- Ex truck driver, and the gentleman in California discovered it can be ground shipped. But we wont have a quote from them until Monday. We may wind up just shipping it via Fed Ex to my uncle, because I believe he has a discount.

Thanks all

Hi, Blake.

We're in TN, too-- around Fayetteville. We run a small business that periodically requires that we ship freight in the neighborhood of 100 to 4000 lbs. Best folks we've found locally in terms of price and service have been BAX Global. They should have a location near you and may be able to deliver direct. You may also have a AAA Cooper nearby-- they're pretty ok, but not as good as BAX. $226 sounds about right to me. You may be able to knock 40 or 50 bucks off, but probably not much more. If you have friends that ship freight regularly they may have a better discount than you can get as a little guy-- check with them. The motor freight world stills operates on some kind of bizarre discount system for less-than-load quantities. Pretty hard to rap your brain around the whole thing.

Good luck, Darren

How soon do you need this shipped? I have a friend that is moving back to Paris, Tn from So. Cal. San Diego area pretty soon. He is already here but his family is still there packing stuff to get ready for the move. He would probably have plenty room for your package if you could get it to his house or they may be willing to go pick it up and when they get here, I could personally bring it to you since I am only 45 miles from you. Respond back if you are interested in this idea.

consider picking up at a freight terminal inplace of having it delivered to a private residence, much cheaper

Yes, the TERMINAL to Terminal, shipping by nationwide truckers, about halves the price. YELLOW has a class 70 for used parts, discounts
for NOT calling you 24 hours a day, discounts for
requesting the quote, etc. I'd gladly drive nine
miles to their terminal, for parts pickup, rather
than some luxury to-my-door pampered service.

I second try a ltl carrier. some others not mentioned are old dominion. roadway, yellow, watkins, AAA cooper. the only problem is some of these companys only have tractors with 28 foot trailers. you will have to ask when you call.

at 150# you are at UPS's upper limit of what they will pick up and as you have found they want an arm and a leg to do that. your best bet is to try some LTL carriers like ABF,CCX or motor cargo most have web sites in which you can enter your info and get a price quote online and then scedule a pickup once you have chosen a carrier, another option is to look at the hauling schedule site on the left hand of this site and see if anyone there can move your cargo for you,
