Own 15 acres - need small tractor (20-40 HP) for wooded land (new house construction underway) land: snow plow, moving wood, etc. Want used. Don't necessarily want antique to to restore. My friends are suggesting an 8N, or a TO35 or Ford 661, or.... Many suggest a live PTO... HELP!!!!

Buy a Ford 3000. Just right for your needs and easy to handle.

First and foremost!! Buy a tractor that is not outdated and the company is still in business. That way you won't have to look over he11 and hald of Georgia for parts, when you need them. Just my 2 cents!!

Dave,

It all depends on how much you are willing to spend. Ideally, I would consider going with a John Deere 2510 but that is going to cost you around 5-6K. A JD 2020 will go for around 4-5 K. After these then I would consider going with one of the ones mentioned earlier or perhaps a series IV Allis Chalmers D17. These are all over powered for your need but I believe that it is hard to be overpowered because you never know when that extra 20 HP will come in need. You usually need it when you least expect it.
Regards,

Mark

I run both a Ford 601 and an 801workmaster haying, fencepost digging, and other general stuff and really like them. I'd not go with the 'N' vintage fords as the later numbered models have slightly more power but are less wore out. The Masseys in the same size would also be a good choice.

Live hydraulics are also important for a general purpose tractor, that the 8N lacks. Older InternationalHarvestor tractors that still have both live PTO and hydraulics include the 300, 350, 404, 504. You might prefer the International (utility) to the Farmall branded ones (row-crop). The utility models are more compact but otherwise have the same features and horsepower as the Farmall of the same model#. IH tractors of this era might not come with a 3-point hitch, but adaptors are available.

Someone else mentioned the MF 135, also a good choice.

N series Fords will get you going, but will have you wanting to trade soon as well. Stay away from obsolete brands. I personally prefer MF and that is what you will have to do, find your preference. 135s are, in my mind, the best. They are pricey though. A MF35 is not a bad way to go.
Live power is great, if you don't get one with it, put an overide clutch on the PTO.
Think seriously about power steering. Remember, you generally pay for what you get, so don't expect to spend $2500 and never have to work on it.

If you aren't brand sensitive there are many good choices- rather than which one, the question is what do I want it to do? I think that live PTO is important, decent hydralics, a 3pt hitch will be easiest to find attachments, gas vs diesel, your own mechanical ability or the location relative to a repairman is important. Good Luck.

The Fords are good, but the best tractor in that size range is the Massey 135.

I personally like the Oliver 550. I have one and have used and abused it. It is my main rig. I also have an AC D10 (kinda rare - lucky deal) that is nice but I prefer the Oliver. I would not spend more then $3K for one but that is me.

As to the price you will have to decide. Will you keep this rig long term or just do your work and sell it. I have also heard good things about some of the new compacts but they are to spendy for my blood.

Also check out the archives on this site as this question comes up from time to time. Lots of other good info there. Hope this helps.

Thens theres price. How much do you want to spend? The 8N has a wish list, I wish it had this and I wish it had that but it is a working tractor and it will do all the chores you listed. But whats moving wood. Firewood? Timber? 2X4s? The 661 is kind of a rare bird. Ive only ever heard of one. The little N's are around $ 1800-$3000 for a working tractor but you could move up to the slightly bigger fords 600-800 models for $2800-4500 which would fit your 15 acres. Somebody else could fill you in on what other brands will suit you but I would look more in the 30-40+hp range.
