I already have a 1951 H that we converted to dual stacks. there is a Farmall 460D that i can get for around 1500 dollars. do you think that this would be a good choice? Any info would be Greatly appreciated. Tell me what you think. Thanks

My son just completed his senior year, and did just what you have in mind. He got a tractor from his grandfather, which solved the purchase price - free, but when we got through the job still cost us over $500, and that was with no major overhaul parts. Basic tractor was sound. Had to repair mostly small items, exhaust, seals & rubber parts, ignition, electrical, paint, upholstery, battery, lights, some sheet metal. He did a pretty thorough disassembly, cleaning, sandblasting, priming and painting. Teacher asked if he got the required minimum 15 hours - heck, he had over 500! That wasn't counting the other requirements, the research, writing the paper, visiting other tractor collectors, getting help from community mentors, and presenting the paper and project to the judges! My point is, that if you choose to take on a project of this magnitude, be ready to sacrifice a major amount of time, work, and money. I wish you luck, and am behind you all the way, the product you get will bring you pleasure, and pride. And lots of education you didn't bargain for! You will have worked far harder than most of your classmates. (I posted a short writeup and picture of son's project - check the archives in the Deere forum - JD B restored by 18 yr old.) (If you need help, bring your questions here - there are a number of very helpful folks willing to assist you.)

The 460 is a nice tractor, but I would stay away from it for restoration unless the diesel engine runs well and doesn't need work. Diesels are expensive to work on- you can rebuild a gas carburetor yourself, but you can't rebuild an injector pump- and sending it out for work can cost many $$$. I'd recommend an older, simpler gas rig.

braden, I wanted a tractor bad when i was 15 but didn't have the money. I did buy a Farmall BN when I was 17, fixed it up just enough to get it running and resold it. It has mostly been that way ever since.

I can't say as I've worked on that many tractors but from what I have worked on I have to recommend the Allis B. It's about as straight forward as I've seen and can imagine. Everything is easily accessable and right there at working height. There were also plenty of them made hence getting parts isn't hard and the tractors quite affordable. I've also worked on Ford 9Ns through 601s, the Farmall Cub and Farmall Super A. The Super A would be next on my list based on what I've worked on.

Braden, congratulations on picking a worth while project. It's something you can learn a lot in the process, and in the end you can be proud of what you have accomplished.

Since you already have an H, I would assume you are familiar with Farmalls. I would suggest you get another Farmall, simply because they are easy to locate since so many were built. They are cheaper than the Deere's, and parts are readily available from many suppliers. Good luck with your project.

You sound just like I did at your age, and I still have classic tractor fever BAD. I think it continues to get worse with age! As far as a tractor choice, well I guess that depends on what you are going to do with the tractor when you are done restoring it. If it is one just to have fun with, well then most any will do. The most important thing to do in my opinion is 1. Get your hands on manuals for whatever tractor you decide to restore. 2. Seek advice and assistance from others as you work through your project. 3. Take your time. It's easy to get in a rush with all the excitement, but it's well worth it to do a top notch job the first time. I think either tractor you mentioned would be good. I have an H with a factory wide front and fenders, but 460's are nice tractors as well. Best of luck, and I hope you enjoy tractors as much as I do.
