I have a 46' Farmall M and just bought a new six volt battery from TSC(Traveler) and it is dead already. I already returned one that I bought from them beacsue it started leaking acid out of the corner seam(not the caps)when I brought it home. It was $60 with excahnge. What would you suggest. I have only started it twice with the new battery and that was two weeks ago. I had to rebuild the carb so it hasn't started in a few weeks. I got a new thick ground cable too. Could my voltage regulator be bad maybe? Thanks.

John W.,

Asking for opinions on batteries may be like asking about motor oil -- everybody has some different idea -which each of us will defend to the death.

My favorite now is an Optima, sealed 6V, rated at 950 CCA and about 54aH. Have one in my H, works like charm, and doesn't corrode the battery box. You can pick them up on eBay for around 70 bucks.

More important, though, is why that one battery went dead so fast. A '46 M might have a cutout (a two pole device mounted on the generator), which, if it gets stuck, can drain any battery very rapidly. You also might have a 4 position light switch which gives you a way to reduce the charge going to the battery in lieu of a voltage regulator (the 3 or 4 pole box mounted on the generator, or up under the fuel tank on an M). I'd investigate those things first as their malfunction might result in your sending yet a third battery into the slaughter.

I have a 9 year old 6 volt Deka that still works fine. It started the tractor just this morning. You should go over your charging system real closely and make sure it is working right. Running batteries down and not recharging them fully will ruin any make battery. Keeping batteries charged does help them last longer.

The highest CCA and Amp Hour capacity battery that says vibration resistant. That said high temps, jolts/vibration over or under charging will wreck a even a premium battery. Hammering old clamps onto a new battery has been the death of many. Anything other than distilled water added to a cell shortens life as well. Worse yet is deep cycling. The dork that shuts the tractor/vehicle off just to open gates. Or those who run down batteries by leaving lights on etc will purchase lots of batteries. For parade tractors and cool weather use the Deere Hibernator batteries. For hot weather/high temps and daily use the Strong Box.

I worked at a New Holland Dealership and we sold quite a few of the New Holland 6V batteries. These are produced by Exide. Of all the batteries I sold this summer, I only had 2 that had bad cells that were under warranty.

walmart has 6 volt batteries fairly cheap if they last 2-3 years no big deal i have used napa also for 12 volt cheap and good warrenty in my area but the may be a problem like over charging or draining check that first or no battey will last a simple solution if you cant find it is to unhook a cable if a battery sits more than a month recharge it like through the winter

Sounds like you have a drain or short somewhere(cut out or reg.). Leave off the cable after you use it and see if it doesn't crank up after a couple weeks, then find the short. BTW, I bought a 6V battery at TSC 2 years ago and they were on sale for $29.95, put it on an M and it worked well. Maybe you got the 'fancy' one?

There's only about two places where all batteries are made, never mind what it says on the outside. I buy cheap. Some will argue with that but it works for me.

Not real sure about a six volt, but I bought a "Strongbox" brand at a Sam's club eleven (yes, eleven) years ago and it still fires my small Ford 1900. Size 31 and around 925 CCA. Was maybe $70. I've seen the same brand for sale at John Deere for a fairly similar price.
I think I saw six volt as well at both places.
Personally, I would steer clear of lesser competition. They think they have the market to themselves with the failure of Family Farm and at the best prices are up where they can. At the worst I think prices are up and I wounder if cost cutting might be getting in the way of quality. My personal opinion.

I have a strongebox from JD too,one in the BR and two in the AR,one in the 1947 Plymouth., so far so good, probably one of the better 6 volt batteries I ever owned.
