Have a question about selling on auction

I see a lot of tractor listings on this site and e-bay with a starting price of a few dollars or so and no reserve. That seems very risky to me but all seem to get a lot of bids. If I did that I'm sure it would get one bid at $10. Just something I've been wandering about. Anyone here list that way?

I start all my auctions with a price I can live with and the first bid means its sold. Some of my stuff never sold when I used a reserve price. It would come within $50-100 of my reserve and stop. I would contact the highest bidder and offer it to them for their bid, no takers. I think some people bid just to play games.I think reserve and buy it now are jokes. If some has a buy it now for $3500 your not going to get for $500 and why have a reserve price if you tell everybody what it is. I think some of the theory of reserve is when you start it at $10 the people go into a feeding frenzy or they figure its their item and are going to keep bidding till you get rich.

I list items on ebay with low or no minimum. It does bring in a few opening bids, but that doesn't always mean it will skyrocket on you.

The way that I look at it is that I want to be rid of that item for whatever reason and if I list it on ebay it should bring whatever the market will bear. I have yet to be disappointed.

this is the way a auction is suppose to work. if you want a set price then sell it do not auction it.yes you should deal with a well visited auction but do not fret if some one else does not think it is the cream puff you think it is.I think most people go in to a auction saying I will sell for this but if some fool is willing to give me more I will take it.when you sell you have to wait for a buyer if you auction you get the product sold quickley and money in your pocket--- you can not have the best of both worlds.

the way the people want it , i sold a 22 mh tractor for 90 bucks a couple weeks ago , no reserve, i sold a 1566 for 1800 last year, but if you bid on your iteam you are a no good sob, i had to quit posting on auction, i put a fresh new one hundred dollor bill on there sold it to big bird for his starting bid 5 bucks just to prove my point, there is no serieous bidders, they think because its a aution it gives them the right to steal or embarass the iteam and you put a 4020 jd in a 1 cond with no reserve some smart ellic will bid 1 dollor , it makes me sick

You lead the buyer to beleve there was a motor in the Massy You also didn't say anything about the steering ALL being torched out or the radiator being a old piece of junk. I'm not complaining just telling the truth Whay was left is worth about 90 bucks I won't bid any better w/o at least a pic

I'm not sure but I think the E-bay charge is two parts. First is based on starting price (listing charge), second on sale price. Therefor if I start an item at $1.00, I will save a buck or two from what if I start it at $100.00 I've sold a time or two, but correct me if I am wrong.

It's kind of expensive to sell a higher dollar item with a reserve, your charged a percentage
of the reserve price if it doesn't sell.To get
around this they just have a friend bid,or have
two email addresses and bid against yourself.
I was high bidder on a sale, when the seller just cancelled the auction,he told me it wasn't high
enough.

Yea, I have. Gotten far less then I expected a few times, but otherwise things have done well. Big ticket items are the only ones I sometimes put a reserve on.

I've never sold anything on a web site.

1. Low first bids get people into the game, and they up it a few dollars - up it as few dollars - and so on. While it works better at a live auction, people tend to keep bidding once they start, so the low opening bid is just to draw people in.

2. Someone will be there to make sure some 'minimum' bid is met, whether it is against web site policy or not.....
