Have a 64 706D w/TA that had been setting for 3-4 yrs. It has no power steering and free-wheels on a down grade and then the drive train engages with a jolt when the tractor slows down. It also will engage and disengage on level ground sometimes. TA lever position does not seem to have any effect on speed or these symtoms. Could a problem in the MCV be to blame? Where should I start?

if you have not changed the hydralic filter try that,if you are in cold country you more than likely have gotten moisture in your hydralic oil and it has made a slime on the filter screen.if this has happened you need to change hydralic oil.

Yes the problem could well be in the MCV as it controls steering, brakes,TA,pumping oil to a cooler, and trans. lube. Heres a couple of ideas-You could have an internal leak in one or more circuits served by the MCV,like the TA. Could also just be time for a new pump. Low flow will cause freewheeling and other symptoms you describe. You only have 5 GPM, I think, to serve the tractor controls so it doesn't take a big leak with an old pump to cause trouble. Also possible key sheared in drive gear on pump. Good luck. Hope this helps some. Others may have more ideas for you.
