Can someone tell me how many gallons 8.3X24 tires will hold so I can determine how much antifreeze I need to buy to fill my tires. Also if anyone knows the mixtures of methanol to water used I'd appreciate that as depending on cost and mixture I might go that route. Thanks.

I have a chart here that says that you'd need 12 gallons (I assume US gallons) for an 8-24 tire, that's as small as the chart gets. The 9-24 uses 15.6 gallons. Those figures are for "water only" which would be the total volume if it were a mixture like you're planning.

Try this link: www.tractorsmart.com/Farm_Tractor_Liquid_Tire_Ballast.htm

That should tell you the tire capacity. As for the ratio of antifreeze, try this one: www.gulflubricants.net/pb/841115_16_Gulf_Premium_Blend_&_Premix_Antifreeze_PB.pdf

We have been using antifreeze for close to 20 years in MD. As I remember, we use about a 3:1 water to antifreeze mix. You only need protection 10 to 15 degrees colder than your coldest winters.

Do you kmow of any place that compares the weight of the antifreeze with the same vokume of calcium chloride?

That is the one drawback to antifreeze, it is lighter than straight water. Calcium chloride can get the liquid weight up to 10 - 12 lbs per gallon easily. Antifreeze mixtures are only going to weigh around 7 lbs/gal.

I'm pretty sure antifreeze weighs more than water--a little over 9 lbs per gallon as opposed to 8.3 or so for water. Methanol probably weighs less. And yes Calcium Cloride is heavy but the down side of corrosiveness is a trade off. I'd like to see a table on the web listing weights of various fluids but haven't found a good one yet. I'd also like to know what percentages of methanol to water result in what freeze level. Anyone know of any helpful sites?
