I bought some new after market parts from Worthington AG Parts the other day. At bottom of the invoice was a charge for 50 cents. I was told it was an Environmental Charge for disposing of oil, batteries, tires etc. Worthington AG is in the salvage business. They are the owner's of the oil, tires and batteries to be disposed of not the customer. These expenses are part of their operating overhead. Making a point of charging customers to dispose of materials the customer doesn't own does nothing but aggravate the customer.
If their idea is to direct the customer's aggravation towards the environment laws and somehow change the nations environmental policy, it's not working. My aggravation is directed at Worthingotn AG Parts for tacking on this asinine fee.
Since Worthington AG will not be my first choice the next time I order parts, I have the satisfaction of knowing that their fee will cost them much more than 50 cents in the long run.

In another note, we needed a pulley for our old JD combine, called local Worthington "recycling center" and they had one for$XX, just for giggles called local JD dealer and got a NEW pulley for less that Worthington wanted for a USED one.

Sadly this is the way business is done nowadays. I would rather deal with a business that charges me 50 cents on my bill rather than hide it in the cost of whatever I'm buying. Any type of repair shop, body shop, or salvage yard has to pay a right hefty price to get rid of the waste products. I pay several hundred dollars a year getting rid of old antifreeze, tire fluid and scrap iron, the motor oil and trans fluid I recycle by burning it in my waste oil furnace. You have probably paid this fee many times without even knowing it because it was built in to your bill. At least they were upfront about it. If 50 cents is going to break you, you are in the wrong hobby.

Would not mind being squeezed, and would not mind parting with .50 but need a good quiet place for it , not in the front of the store

A hidden charge to steal money from a customer is all it is. If the charge was part of the markup from wholesale price, it would be fine. You would know up front what the cost of the part was and could decided to buy or not to buy. Service charges and the like, including the 3 dollars extra a tire shop will charge for a new valve stem, are some of the things that cause me not to buy from that business anymore. Thanks for the info, I'll stay away from Worthington AG.

Environmental charges, and fuel sur-charges. Just another way of business's making up for the increased cost of doing business these days. When I take a load of soybeans in to the elevator, I can't hit them with a fuel sur-charge, or an environmental charge to get rid of the oil and old filters from my tractor and combine. I recently had my pick-up in the body shop. When I got it back, the bill had an itemized list of charges to dispose of thinner and solvents, the masking tape and paper, and cleaning up the paint gun. That is CRAZY. Shouldn't that be included in the charge for painting a fender? With perception being greater than reality, why would a business list this kind of charge? Just write it in with the labor, or part that you are buying, so as not to infuriate the customer. JMHO Oh, by the way, reading this message will cost you $.50. (Electrical sur-charge to pay for having my computer on.)

We get hit with enviroment charges on everything here in Ontario now. Buy gas for the torch or mig enviromental tax, and now I am told the same applies to welding rods.

Doesn't overhead determine the end price of an item. If they charged you .50 more for the item to cover their "enviromentall costs" without showing it, you wouldn't be complaining would you?

I agree. When I was growing up I remember a mechanic that would charge for "wash gas" to clean stuff with. That always iritated me. Wouldn't have bothered if it had been included as part of labor. doesn't make much sence though, as the cost was the same

I agree. Most of the "Environmental fees" being tacked on to your bill should be part of the business' overhead - especially when they are in a business that normally deals with such items.

It is just another way to get your money.

The best way to fight is just like you have done - post it so others see it. Maybe if enough of us complain they will get the hint.
