sent wife to a national chain muffler shop to replace muffler. they did that no problem,BUT they also told her she needed a new air filter. Her being the air head that she is said ok so they sold her a $6.50 ait filter for $23.00. now if that was all then it would be my fault for marying a braindead wife how ever here is my beaf. the crooks removed scraped 1 of the 3 "don't remove" stickers off the lid then removed my $50 K&N washable filter and trashed it. Are there any sage words of advice or guidance for me when I call and discuss this with the manager tomorrow?

I disagree with Dick2. You should educate your wife so she is not a victim. This takes great amounts of time and patience but the first time SHE gives he!! to a service guy with the knowledge and sense you helped instill in her, it is all worth it.

Did your wife know that you installed K&N filters?

Don't get me wrong my wife still makes lots of stupid mistakes when it comes to servicing cars but she tries to learn from them.

I would definately give the muffler shop SHUT for doing it.
T
hreaten them with the "taking advantage of a women" thing.

Are there any TV shows or newspapers that do the "Exposee" thing in your area? Report it to them.

good news all. I went to the muffler shop and guess what they still had my filter. The pimpply faced assistant manager did the old let me see if we still have it routine.he didn't ask me to come see if I could Identify it or any thing just steped around the corner and back with the correct filter in about 15 sconds.gee who would hav guessed.claimed he couldnt refund money but tomorror a real manager will be there with the authority to give me my money back.I'm not through with them yet though I will be contacting the states attorney general and the corprate offices of this chain, apparenty my wife isn't the first woman they've done this to.The woman at the bookstore next door and the woman behind me in line there wern't supprised neither were the girls at tractor supply.Apparently this is SOP for these crooks will post an update in a few days(just so you know it's the chain currently running adds about how their life time exaust system waranty is still good 30years later on the 65 mustang)

I go along with this message.

My wife is a small town girl, used to get ticked at all those slow farmers hogging the road.

Married her 4 years ago, now we drive down the road & she comments on the neighbor's crops, and did most of my heavy tillage last fall.

I suspect that a few clutches will need to be rebuilt a little bit earlier, and I've use a welder a bit on things like the harrow she kept pulling after one hook unhooked.... And so on.

You know, about like me when dad showed me how to do stuff, and I put a little extra stress on the equipment.... ;)

Now, some folks just have no mechanical interest whatsoever. If your wife is like that, then write down what you want done, & have her take that written order in with the service call. Always ask for the 'old' parts. That would be the only way to handle that. I know a few guys that would have done worse than your wife, so no issue on the sex.

I would give the muffler shop heck on this, and lots of demands. Guess I would walk in quietly & give them time to sort it out, but I would be leaving very loudly by the time the issue was 'done'. They do not deserve to be in business when they take advantage of people. While your wife gave the ok so they are not obligated to do anything about it, they are obviously taking advantage of people & I would not be afraid to discuss that with others.

I don't think my wife will ever quite understand what 'feathering a clutch' means. Oh well, she tries real hard, & the look on her face when a field is done is priceless. :)

I think Paul is on the right track. You don't have any legal leverage here, because the Mrs. authorized the work. However, you should have a very frank discussion with the owner of the shop. "We're all adults here- and we all know what a K & N filter is. That is, we all know except my dear wife. The fact that you scraped off a 'do not remove' sticker proves that you knew you were taking advantage of her. Now, Mr. shop owner, I strongly suggest you find out what happened to my K & N filter, and arrange to have it returned it to me. If you cannot find it, you should consider purchasing another one and making believe it was the one you removed. Otherwise, I will be corresponding with the Better Business Bureau, the Attorney General's Office, whoever administers your business license, and Small Claims Court. The days when you can blithely take advantage of those who are not mechanically sophisticated is over, pal, and I suggest you make things right." Check to see if the laws in your state require a service person to retain parts he replaces before you talk to him.

The primary lesson that you should have learned here is NOT to let your wife take a vehicle in for repair. If you can't take it in, get some other guy to take it in. Even the parts stores quoted my daughter higher prices for a part than when I called 10 minutes late and asked for a quote on the same part. I've taken cars in for repairs for my wife's friends and gotten the job done for 1/3-1/2 what they would have charged her. Take advantage of your wife's talents in some other areas and let her do that. Can she cook?

Aloha, I would give it to them for removing the don't remove sticker. As for the the washable K&N filter, there is nothing you can do about it since your wife gave them the ok. Live and learn and I guess one of the tech's has a K&N filter thanks to you.

Mahalo,
Howard

As a muffler shop, they had no business working on the engine. Look over the receipt to see if your wife signed for no parts wanted. If not, tell them you want the old parts returned, even if it means the old muffler, or you will contact the state bureau of automotive repair or similar organization. And they also vandalized the vehicle by removing parts without authorization(the sticker).I'm sure your wife did not tell then to remove it. Looks like the guy did it just to get the filter. You can also threaten to take them to small claims court. Believe me, they don't want to spend the day there!
