Wiring Ford 640

I am redoing a Ford 640 (painting, some parts, etc.). I put the wiring harness on and have problems. No electricity to the spark plugs and the rear light burns out a 10 amphere fuse when I turn it on. Front lights work fine--with direct wire from the battery negative terminal. It is a 6 volt positive ground system.

Any suggestions on how to trace down the problem. I have looked at the wiring diagram a lot, and it looks okay---but must not be.

Aloha, It looks like a short in the wires or lamp fixture to the rear. I would remove the bulbs and also the fuse. Get a VOM meter and test from the fuse holder (the side that goes back to the rear lights) and check for the short or ground. Sometimes it is the fixture itself that is bad. As for not getting any spark, was it running before you removed the harness? If yes, then I would check if there is voltage to the input of your coil (assuming this is a gas engine)with the key on and trace back from there. If there is voltage at the coil with the key on and also if there is voltage in the starting position (starter turning)then I would suspect the coil or distributor. Since you have the wiring schematic it shouldn't be too hard to find the problem. Just take a step at a time and post back if you need more help or what the problem was.

Mahalo,
Howard

Howard, Thanks, Yes it was running before I took things apart to paint the tractor and to replace the harness, etc. I don't think there is voltage getting to the coil, but I will do some more testing when I get time this evening.

Thanks again.
